"What's in your flask?" My running recipe list from COTH

Hello friends! Like many, I’m guilty of having posted a “What’s in your flask?” post a year or so ago. Since then, I’ve perused the annals of COTH to compile an (ongoing) list of recommendations and flask filler recipes.

I credited where I could (though I couldn’t tag due to the number of tags) and am happy to continue to update but wanted to share with the masses!

Where can I sign up to try all of these? :joy:

There is abuse of a lot of good malt whisky: blended scotch would do in the whisky recipes. Or just neat malt in the flask.

I once offered my flask to some fellow riders, one of whom responded with a look of horror and a comment about never riding and drinking. Later on there was a mutually scary incident between a cyclist and the horses. I offered my flask and the non-drinker grabbed it with both hands! There are definitely times when a flask is very good to have.

As I haul into hunt (90 min each way) I don’t drink at the hunt. I clutch my Coke at the brunch and think about how much safer horse is because I’m not drinking . . .I am sure he’s out in the hunt barn in the stall thinking about how much I sacrifice for him.

I hope your horse appreciates your sacrifice Foxglove!

At my barn it’s the “rookie” hunters’ job to fill the flasks, and this will be my first season back out after a lonnnnnng time away so I’m on flask duty! I’m just planning to cap this year so won’t have time to work through too many recipes, but what a wonderful and timely thread

I can contribute a recipe in the bourbon category too, with the caveat that it has not been tested in the field yet: one part bourbon to two parts apple cider, lemon juice to taste, and a few drops of bitters, with bonus points if you mix it the night before and leave a cinnamon stick in overnight. I can report back once it’s debuted in the hunt field, but can already confirm that it’s delicious after a fall trail ride.

@chocolate_chip_in --to the last our members carry Jet Dry bottles (the small ones) filled with whatever each drinks --the expensive silver flasks and the (horrors) glass ones that attach to saddles are too expensive or fragile to lose --most folks carry one in the pocket and a second one ‘for a friend’ on the saddle in the sandwich case --I wish I could find a way to carry hot tea --and keep it hot --on my horse! Thought about the “camel back” water packs but --how to keep it warm . . .

While capping with a new hunt this weekend, I experienced a new one – straight Fireball! That gave me a bit of a shock…

I’m partial to plain Japanese whiskey, neat. Really gives you a nice wake-up kick!

Apple cider + caramel-flavored vodka (Absolut makes one). Serve warm in winter, or make it into more of a punch or sangria with the addition of cold Sauvignon blanc/pinot gris/sparkler of choice. The latter is good for days when the calendar says “fall” but the temps say “summer.”
