And is there a hack, like using your phone somehow?
I have a new instructor, and she’s great, but is just starting out after relocating, and working at a H/J barn. It would be nice to be able to hear her! She doesn’t have a system of her own, but I’m thinking I might get one to use for all my lessons. My hearing is not what it used to be.
CeeCoach looks affordable, but I can’t find any reviews anywhere.
My instructor has a device which I plug my own sport earbuds in. These go around my ears and the speakers are in my ears. I wear glasses and a helmet with them.
The little box it plugs into clips on my jodhpurs.
At his end he can turn the volume up and down. I can hear him. He has hearing the riders turned off as all he hears is deep breathing!
We use our cell phones. I have a wireless blue tooth and my trainer uses traditional headphones. She calls me and off we go. Works great. I use a Motorola Boom blue tooth that sounds good. Others in our barn have their own bluetooths - some work better than others - some my trainer can hear too much breathing/background.
Just install an Intercom app on both your phones. (bluetooth - so you don’t have to “call”)

My coach uses the CeeCoach - it is inexpensive, and works pretty well. Interestingly, it works BETTER in an indoor/covered arena - sometimes in an outdoor, it cuts out when you get too far away. I think the only other downside to it - you have to plug the entire unit in to recharge it, so you can’t have a set of spare batteries on hand and swap them out when the battery goes low. I like that it is 2-way (versus the Comtech) - so I don’t have to yell back. OTOH, she can hear everything I say, hahahaha…
I checked out the walkie talkie apps, but I can’t find one that is Android/iOS compatible.
Does anyone know of one?

At my barn we have tried them all. The winner?
This cheap set from Amazon meant for referees and motorcyclists.
For $120, you can get 2 units.
If one breaks, simply replace it.
Many of the equestrian sets are more expensive and only come in sets of 2.
Here are the ones we tried previously:
Eartec Simultalk - used to be sold at Dover. Lasted ~6mos then crapped out.
OneK, with the rider helmet insert - this one lasted about a year, but it was gross to swap it between riders in back-to-back lessons, and cost prohibitive for each rider to have their own.
CeeCoach – Expensive and fragile - lasted roughly 6mos, the earbuds don’t fit everyone super well
As others have said, the ‘hack’ would be your trainer and you both using your phone + bluetooth.
Either just having one of you call the other person, or using an app. Equibrit mentioned Intercom. I’m wondering if the skype phone app would work if you have internet access on your phone at your barn.
So, to be clear, do we each need to buy a device? Also, can I use any earbuds, or just the ones that come with?

yes, you need 2 units – one for you and one for coach.
We have tried using different earpieces with mixed results. some work, some don’t. some only work one way (i.e. you can hear but the microphone doesn’t work.)
Another one here who just uses cell phones. Works like a charm and I find my little ear buds fit better than those “over the ear” ear pieces that come with other systems.
Now there are many services like http://thebestwalkietalkies.com/ that filter offers from Amazon. There I found myself a $ 64 walkie-talkie and quite satisfied
