What's the value on this horse? Should we pull the trigger? Pitfalls? (With Video)

Yes.

Even a (free) lease (which means no lease fee other than actual expenses) at a barn like that; might be $1500-$2500+ a month. So a 1/2 (free) lease could easily be 10K annually. In the Bay Area similar facility add 50%+.

The added cost of a couple of those USEF sanctioned H/J shows, easily $1500-2500 each. Add another $2000 per show week for showing out of area.

Anyone familiar with that show venue in the posted video, knows results can be found on Horse Show Time. Always interesting to compare results to conjecture.

I was expecting COVID to drive the horse sales numbers up and the prices down. That doesn’t seem to be the case. The asking prices of a 12-14 year old, grade, reliable trail horse seem to start at $5000+ Crazy $$$$.

The stock market hit 30k yesterday. Those that play in the horse show sandbox are not feeling the same heat as those on the bottom rungs of this K shaped recovery. In fact, many have only become wealthier this year, and so horse prices continue to rise & rise & rise… where they stop nobody knows.

Agree generally with @dags. I don’t think “show horse” sales are at all depressed. The opposite, it’s a seller’s market. I don’t know about low end green/trail horse types. But for show horses, COVID seems to be driving prices up rather than down.

Maybe for those with the funds available, it provides a reason not to put things off until tomorrow, yada, yada.

I was really hoping for a better vet report, but thank you for letting us know the outcome. That mare is lovely and appears very kind. Here’s hoping your daughter has a ton of fun, lots of learning, and great success in the coming year…or years with her!

Get over to the trainer with check in hand and buy the saint of a horse ASAP. Horses like that do not come along every day/week/month. Whatever you pay, if the horse vets sound, will mostly be recouped when you sell.

This post is from November 2020, so I suspect OP has long moved on.

And the OP had the lease price confused with the sales price.

As far as I know the horse is still at Rudy’s.

As weird as the zombie bump was, this horse was so cute she stuck with me so I’m glad it appears she’s still in the same barn and apparently doing well.

That makes so much more sense.

No, I didn’t. The horse wasn’t suitable for the purpose we needed, i.e. didn’t have the scope because of some medical issues.

The horse is still doing great, and schooling around a bunch of kids, including her owner’s daughter, who rides super cute.

This mare is outstanding.

Since this post was necro-bumped, along with the wonderful NWC thread at Murieta (and we’re currently sheltered in place/quarantined there!) I thought I’d provide video of my little girl in the 2nd round of Saturday’s children’s hunters, just before the show was cancelled. This is a wonderful horse that was imported by JH Sporthorses through Jens Baackman in Germany.

The horse was a 1.25-.35 jumper in germany, and as of last fall’s Autumn Classic, we’ve been doing the Hunters and Equitation on him. So far, he’s racked up a pretty darn impressive show record. We are very happy that Jan recommended that we make him a part of our family.

Thx @dags he doesn’t do too well in the hack, but the judges seem to love him over fences. He just turned the same age as my daughter (they both just turned 13) so he will be great as an equitation horse as she starts getting into the bigger medals as she gets better. She’s going to stay in children’s hunters and won’t go bigger than 3’ for this year (there are a couple 2’9" medals she wants to do and can’t compete higher than 3’) and next year she’ll probably do the 3’ and 3’3"…

@Mimisdad, so glad you held out for the right horse! I was going to reply that we have had 2 terrible experiences with horses with heart murmurs, then I saw the date of the post

That horse has a lot of the same qualities I really liked about the mare. I like his zen attitude and he has a lovely expression. I bet judges smile when they see him come over the first fence- he embodies what a Children’s horse ought to be. Congratulations on finding such a good partner for your daughter! I bet you go through a ton of QuikSilver.

Your daughter has worked hard and come along well in the last few years! Kudos to her.
