What's Up With Triple Crown Senior New Packaging and Now Hard as a Rock!

We just purchased feed and once again the bags are some sort of lightweight plastic vs. the paper bags. The feed inside is as hard as a rock. Ugh! Nothing says fun like whacking at a solid brick of feed with a piece of rebar!

The loading clerk told me the Triple Crown was sold to another feed company. Is this true?

It’s always been rock hard in the winter…

No, Triple Crown hadn’t been sold. Purina has the milling contact in some areas now, which is new.

I have never had my true crown senior be rock hard in cold weather

I’ve had many bricks - I mean, bags - of Triple Crown Senior in the winter.

I just bought a bag and it was not hard. the bag itself was the same as usual

My latest batch were bricks too. And the TC Complete even worse.

I spoke with the rep about it, they are adjusting the moisture content to accommodate the new bags. She says the overall formula is unchanged. Having fed TCC for several years, this feed is a brick: not a cold brick…a brick. Never seen anything like it.

contact your rep with the bag code and complain! I used the chat feature on their website to track someone down.

Just bought a bag today of the Senior. It’s not a brick at all and I’m in NH where it’s not exactly warm. The bag itself has updated graphics but that it. Some mills would bag in the paper type vs. the plastic type. The rep at Equine Affair said they’re changing all over to the plastic type now that Purina is producing the feed. Like mentioned before Triple Crown was NOT sold. Just changed who produces it/what mill it’s coming from.

I store my feed inside my house so once its below freezing out I never have to worry about it freezing/becoming hard.

Triple Crown is very responsive when you contact them. They’ve always gotten right back to me and answered all my questions. Excellent customer service!

I’m not having any issues or noticed any changes.

I havent had any problem either

Triple Crown used to have their feeds milled in the southeast by Southern States. Cargill bought Southern States mills. Triple Crown did not want to deal with Cargill and now have their feeds made in Purina Animal Nutrition’s mills in the areas formerly covered by Southern States. https://www.triplecrownfeed.com/purinafaq/
I ran in to a Southern States rep in the feed store, and he told me that TC have a nutritionist present whenever Purina is milling their feeds.

Nestle Purina manufactures Beneful, Dog Chow, Cat Chow, and Pro Plan pet foods, which you can find in national grocery stores and pet stores. Nestle Purina DOES use the checkerboard on their pet products. Years ago, Purina was one company, owned by Ralston. The company split many years ago and Land O’Lakes is the parent company to Purina Mills (now Purina Animal Nutrition) and Nestle ended up with the Purina pet side.

Huh. Everything I heard was that Cargill didn’t want to deal with Triple Crown, not the other way around. IIRC, Cargill used to mill for Triple Crown.

I guess it depends who’s telling you ! TC and Cargill are both from Wayzata MN. They have history.
This sort of thing doesn’t help.

I had major issues with bricking years ago and it’s the main reason I no longer use it.

I’d always heard everyone complain about the “brick” quality of TCS in the winter, but I had never experienced it. It was always packaged in the waxed underwrap and paper overwrap packaging, too. Last time I bought feed two weeks ago, it was in the thin plastic/mesh-type bag and was “bricklike.” I had to actually beat it with the claw end of a hammer to get it into my feed bin. And the price increased by $1/bag up to $25.99. I like the feed so much I won’t change it, but what a pain.

My Southern States store owner also told me about the whole change in milling. She said they had a very difficult time being able to continue carrying it and thought they were going to have to stop.

The bag I bought today was just over $27. A few weeks ago it was just over $24. Not happy about the huge increase but I feed a minimal amount just to mask my mares Prascend tablet so I’ll deal with it. I’m guessing the change in milling is causing the price increase. Thanks Purina.

FWIW, the new Pro Elite senior from Southern States looks, smells, etc identical to Triple Crown senior. If the price of Triple Crown had gone up, could be worth checking it out. The one bag I tried was brick ish in the bag but broke up when I poured into the can and stayed soft…but it’s been warm here. It comes in a paper sack.

Does it have Triple Crown’s Equimix? https://www.triplecrownfeed.com/feed…ix-technology/

SS show an analysis, but no list of ingredients.

I’m sure it has to do with storage and shipping too; if they are stored in an cold warehouse and stacked 30 bags high, there is no way the ones on the bottom won’t turn into bricks. My feed store guys used to break them up for us on the pavement in the winter before loading in a vehicle. Thats was 10+ years ago so it’s not new.
