What's with all the monensin-contaminated feed?

My interpretation of what SS told me is that the HACCP process is essentially the feed sequencing in the lines–that it is the safety protocol for managing mills that use monesin and other drugs and make horse feed.

It does NOT (in and of itself) mean those drugs are not used in the facility or even on the same lines. Just that they use the HACCP safety procedure while doing it.

I am getting irritated that I was told, point-blank, by a Triple Crown representative that none of the mills which produced their feed handled monensin.

“Most all feed mills in the US manufacture feeds for multiple types of animals and would, therefore, have various ingredients specific to certain species. We require all of the mills that manufacture Triple Crown to be rumensin free, but some may have lasalosid. I am not sure about salinomycin…”

I have been forwarded e-mail correspondence between another forum member and a feed rep for the Nutrena mills that produce her Triple Crown feed in her area which confirms that the mill which produces her feed does handle monensin.

Not cool.

Brooks Feed in Ontario is an equine only facility. Their feed is excellent.

Has anyone looked into Masterfeed?

I gave up on Masterfeeds eons ago because no matter what the law says there is no prying an ingredient list out of those !@#$s.

Wow - I bet that $4000 fine really hurt Alltech.

FWIW, I also contacted Tribute Feed and was told that their equine feed is produced in a completely separate facility from where the medicated animal feed is produced, so there is no chance for cross-contamination.

For anyone interested, here is the clarification from a Triple Crown representative, regarding what she meant when she stated that “We require all of the mills that manufacture Triple Crown to be rumensin free…”

Hello [CrowneDragon],

I apologize for the confusion about my statement regarding “We require all of the mills that manufacture Triple Crown to be rumensin free”. I was referring to any location on the east coast and I failed to ask you about your exact location. You are correct that some of the Cargill mills do use monesin at the facilities. I have done some further checking about Sterling and can verify that Sterling mill handles monensin, but the facility will be monesin free by March 1st. All the feed mills that make Triple Crown are independently HAACP certified for food safety and follow very strict safety procedures. Triple Crown Nutrition has strived to be the best and most innovative feed company for the past 25 years. Triple Crown has never had a product recall and has a history of being voted “Best Feed” by equine publications.

Should you have any additional questions, please let me know.
Best Regards,

Thanks!!
I appreciate that you posted that.
I did not have any “New” Feed as my horses don’t eat much concentrate. However, I am about a week out from picking more up.

Southern States mill TC in the southeast. They are not monensin/rumensin free. They are however certified.

Wow, this whole ordeal reminds me of the PBB disaster that affected dairy farms in Michigan from the 70’s.

ANOTHER BARN AFFECTED?!

Just saw this on my Facebook feed:

32 Horses in Andrew Palmer’s Barn Exposed to Monensin

:(:(:(:frowning:

Thirty-two horses at Andrew Palmer’s Royal Palm Farm in Eufaula, Alabama have been exposed to the toxic substance monensin. Test results received this Wednesday from the Thompson-Bishop-Sparks State Diagnostic Laboratory at Auburn University detected monensin in ADM Alliance Nutrition Patriot Performance and Patriot Junior horse feed.

Personally I WOULD NOT BE FEEDING ANYTHING PRODUCED BY ADM!!! Why haven’t they recalled?!

Oh crap, I know some people at his barn. Hope all turns out well.

This is getting scary.

I contacted Purina (Landolakes) and I was told they have separate manufacturing systems for the horse and cattle feed in their manufacturing facility. Hope this is true!

I got the exact same response to my inquiry to Purina. But don’t they have more than one facility?

Yeh, so I’m still not 100% confident…

I just emailed Seminole regarding Wellness Senior in Georgia. I will share their response as soon as I get it - does anyone have information regarding them already?

Does anyone know the status of Triple Crown in the Western States, particularly Calif.?

Thanks!

I feel safe using the Kentucky Equine feed from Brooks, but I wonder about my beet pulp?

Call me over reactive but I just switched to crimped oats from Equine Senior until the dust settles. I want to be sure as I can that my horse is safe.

I feel so badly for all the affected horses and the people that love them. :frowning:
