It comes in a less obscene version as well.

Actually one of the cutest dog signs I’ve read something like:
Watch out for the dogs,
old dog, young dog, and
not too smart dog.
:)
We have that one. It reads:
Young Dog
Old Dog
Several stupid dogs
Please drive carefully!
Not sure if this has been mentioned but you need to be careful putting a “beware of dog” sign. If you have the sign and your dog bites someone you can be MORE liable than if you didn’t have the sign. Crazy I know. But if you have the sign they can argue that you knew you had a vicious animal and your insurance company/ legal counsel can have issues. If you don’t have the sign you can always argue you had no idea your dog would bite.
I used to have a fairly aggressive Boxer and was concerned so I put up a sign. My friend was going through law school and alerted me to the issue so I promptly took down the sign!
I haven’t read the whole thread, sorry, but has anyone considered keeping a gun loaded with blanks? Harmless but noisy enough to scare the bejesus out of a prowler if fired from the house?

I’d like to hear specifics of what your friend said. I’d heard that, too, but can’t find anything besides rumor to back it up.

I’m no lawyer, but this roundup seems to point to that if you have a No Trespassing sign and a BofDog sign, you’re more protected: http://www.signs.com/blog/beware-of-dog-signs-protecting-you-your-dogs-and-your-visitors/
OMG, this made me laugh so hard.
Apparently it depends on the state. Each state has liability laws, and some do say a “beware of dog” sign is admitting you have a vicious, dangerous animal.
A friend gave me this sign as a housewarming gift: http://www.amazon.com/Caution-Patrolled-Cardigan-Security-Company/dp/B003TYGAYE
Not threatening, but does put folks on notice that there is a dog on the premises. (In reality, there are 4, and one of them is bigger than a Cardi…) - that’s assuming the cacophony that starts up anytime anyone comes up the driveway didn’t alert them first.

Correct. In some states, an injured person must prove the owner knew or should’ve known his dog had the propensity to bite in order to recover damages. A “Beware of Dog” sign could be evidence that would help to show the owner’s knowledge.
In other states, like mine, it doesn’t make a particle of difference. If your dog bites somebody, you’re liable - unless you can show the injured person provoked the dog.
That’s why some advise you hang a No Trespassing sign as well as the Beware of Dog sign. People with guard dogs know, whether they will state it or not, that their dog may bite. If you announce that no one is allowed to come on to your property, the bitee has already violated the No Trespassing order.
I have No Trespassing signs, and also signs that say Dog on Premises. Anyone contemplating visiting where they are not welcome can interpret that however they like
