When is the auction and will it be online?
The date is not finalized yet. I believe in September/October time frame. Last year it was 23 September but it sounds like it may be later this year. I’ll post once the date is finalized.
Also, I don’t think there will be any way for us to watch it online … there hasn’t been that option in the past.

My Don Frederico mare is in foal to Franziskus for 2104. She is undefeated in dressage tests in the San Francisco Bay area. Lowest score she got was 75%. Her mother Worcester won the biggest mare show in Hanover. My mare’s name is Deanna. She is super! Check out her album below.
Just an update. The Schockemohle AOS auction is October 13th. The catalogue is now up! Our foal is #7, Don Amour.
One thing we found out this year regarding foal naming in Germany is that the owner does not really get to pick the name of the foal. They can suggest, but they don’t get the final say. Looks like I’ll have to update my website.

THAT’s odd… at least it seems odd to me. Who gets to name your horse? Who named yours?

Well at this point that’s for the auction. Not sure that’s permanent.

Traditionally, foals don’t get official names in Germany. Only mares and stallion entered into the breeding books get REAL names.
Some years back, I bought a foal that was in the Elite Oldenburg auction. His breeder called him Dicaprio, but the auctioneer gave him a different name. He stayed in Germany for several years to grow up, and when he was picked for the Oldenburg auction as a 3 y/o, he was given an entirely different name by the (same) auctioneer.
Funny thing is he was imported under that 3rd name, but the import company got his name wrong on the import papers. He left Germany as “Double Click” and arrived in the U.S. as “Double Quick”. And I promptly changed his name again, so he is registered with USEF/USDF under his FIFTH name (the name I wanted all along). But I may have to change it again, because there is ANOTHER horse registered with USEF/USDF with that name (same registry, same year of birth, etc.).
So these auction foals have made up names from the auction company? LOL

Mostly, yes. Remember that the foals don’t really have official names with the registries, nor are they registered with the FN. The auction houses have to put them in the catalog under SOME name, so the auction team gives them an “auction name”. Sometimes, though, the breeder/seller wants the foal in the catalog under a certain name, and that gets worked out with the auction house. For instance, if the name isn’t one that might be confused with another well known horse, the auction team may agree to use that name.
Also, in Oldenburg, mare names traditionally follow the damline. The auction house, though, always gives every horse a name that follows the sire line (mostly for marketing purposes, I think). But the horses very frequently get named something else entirely once they are registered with the FN, and/or are enrolled in the breeding books as mare or stallion, and for mares, that name usually reverts back to the damline. (This isn’t true in Hannover, where naming conventions dictate that all horses are named after the sire line.)
Also, it isn’t unusual to see a mature horse show up in the Oldenburg auction that was sold as a foal through the auction under an entirely different name (and the foal auction name is noted in the catalog description).
FWIW, my imported horse’s passport and certificate of ownership show no name - only life number, sex, date of birth, color and markings, pedigree, premium foal/stallion prospect designation, breeder’s name, etc.
(And apologies for getting so far off topic!)
