When to string test?

I did some searching and could only find how to do a string test, but not when. What age have you found to be the most accurate for mid-knee to cornet string test or the ergot to elbow to withers string test?

ergot is more accurate
can be done from 12 months of age on

Just did my two long yearlings…
One came in at 16.1. the other over 17h… Hope that’s not right!

When to string test? Never. Not accurate.

I am just looking for a guesstimate, I don’t expect precision.

Sorry to hijack, but when you do it… do you follow the contours of the limb or just do the straight line?

Straight line on mid knee to coronary band; elbow to ergot, straight line, but when you flip it up from the elbow, take the high end of the string directly over their spine…

I’ve always heard over a year, or if you want to do it sooner on the elbow/ergot one, under 6 months you can to elbow to the ground, but that never seemed right.

If a horse has correct conformation, a string test is fairly accurate give or take an inch…go do it on your full grown (non-fugly) horse
