Where and how are you selling your high-end used saddles?

Greetings. I haven’t sold a saddle in ages, and back then used Ebay. Since the dark age, the FB pages have really taken off, but I have no idea where to start (besides great pictures). I have a beautiful, barely used [high-end] saddle that my horse has outgrown. So $3,000-3,5000 range. Where would you sell this saddle?

Also, any tips on how I protect myself from getting screwed? This is a lot of money.

TIA!

I have sold 3 Antares jumps saddles on FB group pages. I had trouble selling my Passier GG extra dressage saddle on Ebay and FB groups so ended up sending it to a tack store in Indiana (I’m in California). They sold within a week for more money that I had been asking. When I sold my jump saddles through FB, I always used PayPal and offered a 7 day trial period. They pay shipping both ways. Didn’t have one returned and everyone was upfront. Good luck!

@Puzzled, which tack store did you use?

I don’t sell, but I’ve bought high end saddles on eBay. Also from Charlotte’s Saddlery in Texas and Dallas Fort Worth Saddlery when they them on consignment. I’ve never had a bad experience with any of the foregoing and recommend them to everyone. Both domestic and international on eBay, too.

In order not to get screwed: Do a search of these forums, BBB and Yelp.

I have bought and sold saddles through Fine Used Saddles. Patricia is awesome to work with. She hasn’t been accepting new consignments due to a planned relocation over the summer and then the set back of Hurricane Harvey (she is located in the Houston area)…but hopefully by the end of this month can start taking them in again. I have a saddle I want to consign with her. I tried selling it on eBay and various FB groups, but because I didn’t offer a trial period I had a lot of interest but didn’t get any reasonable offers. I’m really leery of eBay, and wouldn’t accept an offer from anyone with no feedback. That said, it’s still no guarantee because EBay and PayPal are on the buyers side. I think for a pricey saddle it’s safest to sell locally or consign it.

I sold a high end french saddle through Bevals. There were in my neighborhood, so I figured if there was ever a problem I could walk over and see the saddle, get a check or whatever.

They sold my saddle for a price I was happy with and I receive a check promptly.

I second Patricia at Fine Used Saddles. Although I haven’t sold a saddle with her she does appear to have a good reputation and is very organized and knowledgeable.

I’ve also sold saddles via Fine Used Saddles and it’s always been an excellent transaction.

I’ve used Patricia as well and she was great.

Highly recommend!

I haven’t sold a saddle through Patricia, but did purchase one through her and was thrilled with the result! The entire website is great, and gets quite a bit of traffic.

I’ve had a saddle out on consignment for quite a while, but it’s a quirky saddle to sell (mid-price Albion that has had its tree adjusted)… maybe I could try contacting Patricia once she’s taking saddles again?

Also curious what tack shop that was, as it is my neck of the woods.

As soon as my new saddle arrives I will need to sell my JRD. I have mine priced below what most of them are going on eBay for, but so far no luck on FB. Thinking I may need to cosign it instead.

I sent my dressage saddle to The Stable Tack Shop-Indianapolis. They have a FB page. I’m a follower (thanks to a friend that lived in Indiana) and saw them post a request for consignment saddles.

I have used Patricia several times both to buy and sell saddles. She is very professional and has helped me out many times.

Whatever you do, don’t use Trumbull Mountain. While your saddle may get sold, you will have a hard time getting your payment from Trumbull Mountain. It’s a shame really as they seem quite knowledgeable and have a huge selection. They have yet to respond to the numerous complaints on COTH and their BBB listing is pretty scary. I also won’t buy a saddle from them because of these issues.

Thanks for the info everyone. I just bought the saddle in March and hate to give up 25% right away, but appreciate all the good and bad reviews regarding consignment. Since Fine Used Saddles isn’t accepting any right now anyway, I think I will try FB first and then Ebay as a back up.

I’ve been perusing the FB ads and it isn’t clear to me if people are giving trials or not???

One thing someone did warn me is NOT to use friends and family on paypal, but to let them take the cut because you get more protection. Honestly, I hadn’t even thought about that. So that was good advice.

Try contacting the saddler that you bought saddle from, maybe they can help.

There’s a FB group just for you ;): High End English Tack Trader.
Don’t know anything about it, just joined myself (to look, not sell)

Hunterdon Commons is good. They use PayPal and a rating system like eBay so you’re protected from scams to some extent. You can search by location also to narrow it to saddles near you.
