Where can buy I black Melton wool?

I am looking to have a custom made frock coat as I have access to a very good seamstress. Long story short, I originally thought I had a source for the Melton, but just discovered this afternoon that not only did they not have any, they had no idea what I was on about.

So does anyone know where to get black Melton wool?

You could try G Street Fabrics in Northern Virginia. Might be listed as Chantilly or Centerville, Va. They had some foxhunters on staff. Be sure to ask for a foxhunter.

One of them helped me with fabric for colors and 4 fold stock ties. They will probably have the patterns, too.

The journeyman saddlers would be a good place to call, too. Punkin knows many sources.

just my idears!

Really large or chain fabric stores might carry some. I found one in Centerville, Va. that had a couple of bolts of different weight materials that would work a coupla years ago. Often they will order it for you. I was looking for some to put black wool back on some meltons that had my other hunts colors on them. No longer a member and guesting/rejoining another hunt requires a plain black collar again. I can’t afford to buy more coats so trying to match the wools was quite difficult. It’ll always look different but it’s close.

This was the main website I was looking at before I posted surprisingly. However, I suspected that the 24oz/yard was on the heavy side and someone informed me (privately) that it indeed was very heavy, which as I was looking for something more toward medium weight (so I could layer depending on the temp) ended up being disapointing.

This came as an idea by my fiance - we’ve still yet to make it out to the larger store in the Cleveland area, but do hope for some luck there.

Ooops, forgot to add:

An ex-MFH of my hunt recommended more of a black wool twill as it won’t be so heavy as a melton - so I have to admit to have started looking more for this at the moment.

Well yeah - that’s the whole point - impervious.

Impervious is indeed good - being cooked alive… not so!

cavalry twill

The twill is know to tailors as cavalry twill. It doesn’t collect lint as much as melton, has a hard finish, wears like iron. It does have more flexibility, so you can move.

I have one that goes back to the 84 olympic trials, and still going strong. I had it made with extra material in the seams, so it could be let out as needed. I also had a technical wicking fabric in the lining. My winter weight one has an insulating/wicking/wind block fabric layer.
