Where do you look for saddles to buy?

I’m at the point where I realize one of my favorite endurance saddles is too wide for two of my horses, and too narrow for the other. I need to sell it but would like feedback on where to list it. Where do you guys look for saddles? Endurance.net? Ebay? Or consignment like Trumbull Mountain?

I didn’t realize how much Ebay fees have gone up, and Trumbull Mtn. charges 25% for a consignment fee. Obviously I’m trying to get the most money for the saddle but am willing to pay for exposure.

Any thoughts? TIA!!

Tacktrader.com, endurance.net, horsetopia.com, equinenow.com, horseclicks.com, and the bits and barter board are all good sites to consider. Many are free. Craigslist works is another possibility for the local crowd.

I used TackTrader and HorseClicks to sell my Bates Event. I used Ebay to sell a basically new Billy Cook. If you can sell it for what many would consider a deal, Ebay is quick and easy. If you need the money from it or it’s a less popular model that doesn’t have as much market, go with one of the others.

HOWEVER, most of the Ebay fees actually go to PayPal. So if you plan to use PayPal even if you don’t use Ebay, you’ll still lose about the same amount of money to fees. The benefit to Ebay is that you may sell it more quickly. The other sites let you keep the listing up for longer, but they don’t get as much traffic.

Thanks guys, I hadn’t thought of TackTrader or HorseClicks. As a higher-end saddle I think it might be too expensive to appeal to many locals or Craigslist shoppers, but it’s free so certainly can’t hurt.

Hampton, am I right in understanding that Ebay fees are approx. 9% of the final purchase price, and then there would be another 3% on top of that for the PayPal transaction? I haven’t sold anything on Ebay for a while so I can’t recall how it went in the past. I thought ~12% was a lot (about $260) but I guess less than a 25% consignment fee.

I was also told I should list it on Moss Rock Tack. Anyone ever look there?

I’m not sure exactly what the fees are, but the charges for the one I sold elsewhere but was paid through PayPal were very similar to the one I sold on Ebay and was paid through PayPal. Both saddles sold for about $960, and the fees for both were around $40.

I won’t use PayPal anymore. They suspended my account when I logged in from someone else’s computer, and for me to get it back up I have to either get a landline or get a driver’s license that was issued within 6 months. No joke. I can’t make a new account either because you’re only allowed one PayPal account per bank account number. So I will only accept money orders for anything I sell from now on.

If we’re just talking online, then I’ve used Ebay with great success in the past. All of the saddles I have, western and English, are from local shops or a private person. My western saddle, I hauled my horse down to the shop and the owner fitted him with one (an older Crates) and it fits like a glove.

There are some great Facebook Groups for Saddle Shopping, some brand specific like Tucker. Others are discipline specific like Endurance, Western, Dressage or simply English. I’ve had great success both buying and selling within these groups. Have also bought of eBay as well.
