Where do You Shop for Your Next Horse?

Curious… where do you shop online when you start a search for your next horse… or next piece of tack for that matter (thinking used). Do you use Facebook? Are the old websites like dreamhorse or equine.com still used? I remember back in the day, I always used dreamhorse or equine.com and a handful of others, but now there are so many facebook groups I never go there anymore… I also used to go to VirginiaEquestrian.com all the time.

Just wondering if those online sites even have any usefulness anymore…

All of the above plus individually reaching out to any trainer whose program I respected, FB ISOs, FB general searches, craigslist, tack shops, word of mouth, etc. This round I sat on 40 and they came primarily from Facebook posts, word of mouth, and equine.com. In the end, I found one who wasn’t listed at a barn where I’d traveled to see a couple at once.

I tell myself I’m not buying another equine so I can save my pennies for a really lovely youngster, and then, inevitably, a friend/acquaintance/random person in the street will say “I know of this really great horse, only - it needs some rehab/ retraining/ fairy dust etc. and I thought of you!” and then I will, inevitably, somehow have a new project.

So. Astral projection or something? Idk :upside_down_face:

I’m currently shopping and found two on Dreamhorse I like immensely. The FB sites I use have been pretty sparse lately in horses I’d be interested in looking at. I’m too old for projects or ones that need a specific ride or needs a pro once in a while to stay sane.

I found my filly on Facebook, but I only knew of the breeder due to their ads on Equine.now

I found my recent purchase on Equine Now

Most of my projects I have found off FB or craigslist. Now that I am no longer doing projects, if I wanted a well broke all around horse I would look at Equine Now first (wonderful site, I have also sold a few horses through it), then Dream Horse.

I wanted to add–I have found a lot of horses through word of mouth as well. Word of mouth can really help uncover a gem that perhaps someone hasn’t advertised yet, or that they are only marketing through word of mouth.

I found my current horse on warmbloodsales.com, however the focus is either on incredibly green prospects or high-end, made (sometimes GP) quality horses. Hard to find in-betweeners!

Word of mouth has served me well so far. One past purchase was off of CL and amazingly enough we still have her 10+ years later and she has been a gem.
