My trailer lives in Waldorf MD but i (and my truck) live in VA. Someone said i should just get registered in Maine but I certainly dont want to get pulled over by a cop with my horse in the back so I think I should probably play it safe. My sticker expires this month. It seems like a major pain to hitch up and drive over the WW bridge just to get inspected, and…at my local inspection place that “takes trailers”?! Anyone have a suggestion?
I take mine to American Truck and Trailer in Manassas. They can take a kind of long time (last time was 2 weeks) to get to it, so make sure you’re dropping off during a period that you’re ok without your trailer. Otherwise, fairly priced, right on it with their estimates, and really thorough.
I register mine in Maine. It’s fast, cheap, easy*, and totally legal. Take a look at semi trailers – a large number are registered in Maine, and they’re subject to much more scrutiny.
*unless your trailer has LQ
I live(d) in N.Va and registered my trailer in Maine. Never had an issue with being pulled over or ticketed. Lots of trailers are registered in Maine for this reason, and I’m pretty sure the cops and troopers know about the benefits of doing so, so they’re not going to automatically assume the worst if your truck plate’s state don’t match your trailer plate’s.
Thank you all for the advice. I ended up just taking it to Alban Tires and paid $20 and three hours total of my time for the inspection. Maybe I’ll switch to Maine eventually but as someone who spent a night in jail for literally a DMV typo, I’ll play by the rules for now.
