Where my Arabian peeps at?

Yay, kids and Arabs! Here’s my oldest boy back when he was 2 1/2 (he’s nearly 8 now) on our sweet old girl…lost her in 2011. :frowning: I’m wearing my helmet to encourage him to wear his. Here’s the same boy the night before we had to say goodbye to her–how he loved her. And how she took care of him! I’ll never forget one time I was handwalking her, and that same son was maybe 3 or so. He’d run ahead, and we’d scold he had to come back and walk with us. One time he ran ahead, and she pinned her ears and nickered at him–calling “her” foal back just as I had been. Heh.

My youngest barely knew her and now has no memory of her, but got to sit on her as well that final night.

But we got a new boy–the aforementioned Tril–and both of my boys adore him. Now, Tril is a retired show horse who’s been there, done that, winning in Santa Barbara and placing at Scottsdale in his 3-5yro years (he’s 11 now), but packing my kids around was a new experience for him. Now he loves it. My youngest, now 4, LOVES riding on him–while he’s been on our mini, he MUCH prefers Tril. In fact, last time he rode the mini, he said, “Mommy, I never want ride Firefly again. Want ride TRILOGY!” WELL then.

Now my oldest is using Tril to learn some basics of riding–I put him on a lungeline without reins to focus on seat. Tril is still a little confused what we’re doing, but is dutiful and does a great job. They do so well together. Good boys.

What a sweet walk down memory lane that was. Thanks for the opportunity.

Somewhere I have pictures of my sweet old girl meeting my boys when each of them were 2 weeks old, but don’t see them online.

OMG. I die from the cuteness. What an awesome mare. Thank you for sharing this lovely memory. Is Trill the trailer lead rope destroyer that I remember from an earlier thread?

Lauruffian,
Thank you also for sharing the photos of your sons and your beloved mare and Trill.

Your mare was stunningly beautiful. I’m sorry for your loss.

Yay you for wearing your helmet and having your sons wear a helmet! I wish more parents were like you. I work with soldiers returning from the war, most of whom have mTBI, so wearing a helmet is something of a “soapbox issue” for me. You only get one brain.

Judging from the photos of your son riding Trill, he (Trill) looks like he is utterly incapable of giving a good spook. What a great horse!

Best,
Amber

![]( owned 8 QH’s in 1983 when I bought my first Arabian. Sold the QH’s shortly afterward. I love the Arabian’s spirit and loyalty. Funny, I acquired a mare last year who had been handled roughly by trainers to the point she refused to enter an arena, period. Although she’s very wary of adults at this point, she absolutely loves children. We are taking things slowly and I think she’ll be ready to ride in a year or so.

Wow! That mare is a stunner! drools

MyssMyst,
How did the other horse react to your PB mare guarding your son? Just curious. You obviously have a Arabian war-mare on your hands. bows respectfully[/QUOTE]

The reaction was, “Oh SH!T” and a bail the other direction. She may be tiny, but she has even my two-hands-taller HA gelding TERRIFIED of her. In her defense, my gelding is obnoxious as heck! I know I won’t have to worry about a thing when the kids show her walk/trot-jog this year. No matter what happens, she’ll get them through the class safely. She loves her kids, and they love her. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect first horse for the kids. And she has the, “I did my job, now I KNOW you have treats for me!” face down pat, lol.

Thank you so much for the compliment. Like my stallion, Independence Dey, she is a horse I never could have afforded, but things have a way of panning out. She was imported from Brazil by a BNF and sold to a friend of mine for mid five figures in 2006. She is very sweet but distrustful of adults and I don’t blame her. She is in foal to Independence Dey for a summer foal.

Thank you! She toes out just a tad but no interference. Her personality is what sold me. She had never been ridden at 7 and yet tries so damn hard to figure out what I want.

Hoping to do dressage and trails with her. My foxtrotter gelding hits 20 this year so she is my project to bring alone as he gets older.

I wouldn’t trade my Arabian for anything. My mare was the best, and my boy is just as awesome as she was. There just isn’t any comparison…Arabians are just a step or ten above.

Your mare is obviously descended from desert war-mares. That other horse probably saw his life flash before his eyes! Your mare is a treasure.

Please come back and post pics of the foal. That baby is going to have tons of presence!

I’m glad that the mare landed safely with you. She’ll come around eventually. I’ve worked with traumatized horses like that before. Once she decides to trust you, she will happily go through the hell and high water for you. Please come back and keep us posted on her progress.

Sterling (aka "Fluffy) is my grade Arabian gelding (we’re close to reuniting him with his papers). He was given to us by his previous owners (they were not the ones who abused him) to be a pasture buddy for my gelding, as they had been unable to sell him or even give him away for the past two years due to behavior problems. Sterling had a bit of a “reputation” around the horse community here; the common consensus was that Sterling was a “turd.”

Anywhoodle, eighteen months later (to our great surprise), Sterling has turned into a steady eddie, bombproof, dead-broke, stereotypical “husband-safe horse.” We joke that he’s a QH trapped in an Arabian body. He still goes into panic mode if he gets anywhere near a bit, but (thanks to Amanda from ABN) he goes quite happily in a simple sidepull.

We recently adopted a mini from the rescue that we’re involved with. Moonie has a documented history of physical abuse. He actively hates all humans. I’m expecting it to take a year or two for him to decide that my husband and I are safe. Moonie makes the tiniest bit of progress each day.

So… Tell us all about your Arabians?

I totally agree with Ms. Kathy. Your mare displays the best of both breeds. You should be proud of owning such a lovely horse.

Your mare is just lovely! I know that it sounds shallow, but I love her glossy true-black color.

My gelding was only ridden a few times by someone who started him in a long-shanked curb bit (as you do) when I bought him when he was 7 y/o. I had to re-start him from scratch. There are quite a few people on COTH who have, or are, starting a horse late.

Oh man, my Arab growing up was soooooo much smarter than me. No use denying it! Everything was a discussion. I loved him to bits but must admit my warmbloods seem like a vacation by comparison. “You want me to do what? Oh, ok.”

Here ![](s the remainder of my “herd;”

This is My Texas Connection (Hucks Connection V x My Sky High). She is a 2 1/2 y/o Half Arabian and will be going under saddle this summer.

And this is My Independence (Independence Dey x My Sky High). He is 8 months old and is going to be a stellar dressage and/or hunter.
