Where to buy pop rocks?

My BO is absolutely certain my guy has an ulcer. I’ve owned him for 12 years and we’be done a couple rounds of ulcer mess over the years. I do NOT think he has an ulcer- he’s low risk: lives out 24/7, with friends. No travel. Plenty of hay and grass (20 acre pasture). Just a handful of grain twice a day. Basically zero stress in his life. He does crib, but we’be scoped/ GGed/UGed him and it’s never stopped him. He just lightly cribs.

Unfortunately, once my BO gets on something she won’t let it go until something is done. I’m not paying for a scope, but I figure pop rocks can only hurt my pocketbook. Can anyone link me? Or have suggestions for something equally affordable to eat the BO off my back (horsey really loves this barn)? Thanks!

abler.com?

like pop rocks the candy? I find those at the Dollar stores in my area.

Curious why you are basically bowing to your BOs decision of how to spend your money on your horse when you have already dumped $$ into vetwork that disclosed no ulcers and pricier meds to treat them just in case.

Cribbing is sometimes discomfort from ulcers ulcers but it’s not a given. I have proved that with $$$ worth of diagnostics and the pricey ulcer protocol for months on horses that still cribbed. Like I’ve been biting my nails for decades, it’s habit, not pain.

I suppose it’s possible he’s got hind gut trouble making him uncomfortable but thats a different treatment, pop rocks wont touch it.

Offhand, your BO is crossing the line badgering you over treating something that you have treated without results. It’s not her horse or her decision. Realize the cribbing might drive her nuts but that’s part of being a BO if they accept a cribber, but insisting on repeating previously unsuccessful treatments is inappropriate.

Far as I know, pop rocks are only available from Abler. They are (way) offshore based and operating outside of regulatory authority. Most have no issues but a few have run into some snags with CC acceptance and shipping such a great distance. Seem to recall the shipping companies and Post Office refused to accept or deliver at one point but that might have been Canada and can’t remember the details. Do recall some CC issuers declining the charges or asking for additional authorization from the cardholder due to the location of the shipper and nature of the shipment. YMMV.

Pop rocks is the nickname for the abler granulated enteric coated omeprazole for horses. They are these granules that are shaped like pop rocks and are blue. If you go to abler.com under the gastric ulcer treatment you can see a picture of the package and the blue in the corner is the granules.

Thank you!
Ok, I was doubting it was actual Pop Rocks LOL but if you do need to find unusual candy check the dollar store.

I’m just going to leave this right here…

Pop rocks can hurt a lot more than your wallet. As my vet is fond of saying, “even water has side effects.”

I would not treat for ulcers unless you know you’re dealing with ulcers. Omeprazole is not a “no risk” drug.

I’ve posted many times about my TB who went on omeprazole over the course of a couple of months. Worked great on him and made a tremendous positive difference. But while it was helping his stomach ulcers, it created or exacerbated hind gut ulcers. I wound up with $10k in vet bills for 2 bad gas colics as a result of the horse being on pop rocks/omeprazole long term. Pulled him off of omeprazole and we’ve had no problems since (nor had we had any problems in the 7 or so years prior to that).

I will never again put a horse on omeprazole in any form without something to address the hind gut as well (Succeed, SmartDigest Ultra, or something along those lines). For the years following that incident I have stuck to apple cider vinegar, smartdigest ultra, and a product called Stomach Happy (a Chinese Herb) to help wean him on/off of Omeprazole, which I still use at horseshows.

Perhaps you could try Succeed to assuage your BO. Or any other natural-type thing to address ulcers: apple cider vinegar, alfalfa, aloe vera juice, etc.

I have had really good results using the Abler products but I buy both the omeprazole and the absulcralfate (for hind gut issues.)

Do you feed them at the same time?

I would not to omeprazole, but I absolutely love the Gastro Plus Pro product from Equine Science Solutions. It’s made a huge difference on every horse I’ve tried it on. It’s not cheap, but it’s nowhere near as expensive as GastroGuard.
