Where to find warhorse TB mares

I’m just glad they got homes. Thanks for all your effort with this, Simkie. This whole thing sort of fell into your lap and you really did a lot to help those girls out!

Not to say, “I told you so,” but going back to the original topic at hand:

If one is looking for a “war horse” mare, the best place to start is the track itself. Cheap horses continuously need homes when they are not longer competitive.

Aw, thanks, Tex! I don’t know if I really did anything for these girls in the end, but I did what I could  I’m just glad they wound up somewhere safe!

Glad they found homes!

That running stag mare on the Ocala website looks very much like my mare by running stag. Bet she’s a nice one!

I have one but she is in my broodmare band now (and has produced well) so not looking to sell her! I found her by calling a trainer at the track about one mare he had listed with Canter. That mare had sold…he said he had another that he was originally going to bred for himself but would let her go. He gave her to me. She was in BAD shape but he did care for her and still stops by to visit. She is a lovely type and a good mama. I got her approved with a WB registry and love her foals. Nice athletes with good brains. I’m crossing her to Tatendrang next year.

You just have to put feelers out. Often the better lines for sport horses are not as commercial for racing.

I don’t really have anything to add to the discussion other than another OTTB rehoming group…www.finalfurlong.ca Based n Winnipeg Manitoba but international shippers come through on almost weeky basis…

Here is what I believe is her pedigree, and it’s, IMO, pretty darned spectacular for a sport horse.
http://www.pedigreequery.com/jeepers2

Tail female line is wonderful, all the way back to Black Duchess with proven sport horse breeders (in France and the US) through Spotted Beauty and Beadah and Hooplah; no Northern Dancer; no Mr. P; a Djebel double; all three foundation sires on the first page plus 1 for the mares; a sire who was tough as nails and ran for years, winning G1s each year; and an absolutely wonderful mare line.

FWIW, Hooplah was the dam of Auction Ring, who was a prolific sire for eventers in Ireland. He was the sire of Bohemond, the damsire of Winsome Adante and Formula One.

If I were in the breeding business, I’d jump on her like a duck on junebug if she is breeding sound. She’s only twelve.

Somebody please get her!

Not sure how you would define a war horse but there is a nice mare on Fingerlakes. She has several lines I like to see for sport horses. Nice type too. I would seriously consider her if I had space.

Here are some mares from current listing that I have come across that I really like

Tizza Tigress: 2012 bay mare by JAZIL and out of a mare sired by TIZNOW and out of a SILVER BUCK mare. 18 starts so not exactly a “war horse” but shes retiring sound. Very pretty, balanced mare. What struck me the most on her photos was her quality of foot and leg. Located at Golden Gate Fields http://canterusa.org/horses/17061/tizza-tigress/

SHAYNEET: 2012 bay mare by ATHLETE who is by SAINT BALLADO (HALO) and out of a GONE WEST mare. Shes out of a mare by Terrell who was a very balanced, beautiful conformed stallion by DISTORTED HUMOR x DEVILS Bag lines. She’s black and she’s pretty! Again, not a war horse mare but going by pedigree and how she looks, I like her.

She’s by FORMAL GOLD (Black Tie Affair x Silent Screen lines) and out of a mare with Danzig, Alydar, and Najinksi in the first few generations. She is a plain bay but she is beautifully built. http://canterusa.org/horses/16124/sister-voe/

AMOR IMPOSIBLE: This one also fits the bill of war horse mare. 45+ starts. She’s by PURE PRIZE (Storm Cat x Seeking the Gold) out of mare who was by an ALYDAR son. BETTERLEGSONATABLE: I hate this poor mares name, but what a pedigree and she is very pretty too!. She is by a stallion who is sired by City Zip and out of Runaway Groom bred mare. Her dam is by Dynaformer (Roberto --> Hail to Reason) and out of a mare by the pretty stallion Catrail (Storm Cat). She just “Looks” like a successful sport horse mare to me. CHeck out her photos!

JOINT ATTEMPT: 2010 grey mare by NORTHERN AFLEET (By AFLEET and out of a Nureyev mare!). Her dam is by Runaway Groom (Blushing Groom) and out of a Conquistado Cielo mare! CHANTILLY SAMI: This mare does not have a lot of starts under her belt but it is clear that she just isn’t a racehorse by her results…no talent. BUT she is extremely pretty/almost black and very well bred! SHe is by WAR CHANT (Danzig x Kris S!) and out of a mare by Private Terms who was out of a Raise a Native mare!! I’d be taking a chance on this beauty if I had the room

I don’t get people, owner trainers even less. This mare ran for 8 years and hardly paid her way. Talk about dreamers.

Looks like a pretty mare. But is by a stallion that should never have been standing at stud to begin with.

I have a beautiful 10 year old mare by Not for Love that has a much better family. She hasn’t had a saddle on for over a year but was going well when she did. Nice jumper, correct standing 16+ hands. Her half siblings have been really nice sport horses.

I’d take $2,000 for her. Lightly raced winner retired at the beginning of her 4 year old season sound. I’d give her to the right person with strong references.

Gumtree, I think everything advertised on CANTER always exceeds its actual value. Partly because they want to price high enough to deter tire kickers or unsavory buyers, partly because show people value “prospects” in a much different manner than race people.

A friend paid nearly $10k for an “eventing prospect” directly off the track who was running for a $7,500 tag. And, he needed a chip removed. I told her she was the biggest sucker on the planet. Years later, horse went to Rolex… maybe not such a bad investment after all.

Have a vet check the sores around her mouth before you bring her home.

Looks like lack of pigmentation, pink skin to me.

really nice grey mare. Yes she raced for a long time with no success but shes sound, got good bone, legs look really clean for how long she’s raced, great type to her. Obviously lovingly well cared-for too. Cute mover also! Someone scoop her up.

I wish there were more connections to get horses off the track. A lot donate to rerun, etc but I hate having to fight others off for a horse out of a place like that. I’d love to go to a nice track and tour the barns and look at young prospects who just aren’t racehorses. You can find diamonds in the rough at places like parx and Charlestown but I find that most of the horses listed at these claimer tracks are the bottom of the barrel and often are not suited to demanding second careers. again, not 100% the norm but…

why cant I go to Churchill or Belmont and find a nice, young gelding who needs a new career LOL
