Where to put my cell phone while on the trail?

I’ve been wondering where to put my cell phone when I go out trail riding. For now, I just keep it on me in a zippered pocket on my jacket because its still cool outside. But I don’t know what to do when it gets to be summer…I was thinking of getting a saddle pad with a pocket on it, but that doesn’t help if I get dumped off on the trail without my horse or the phone…my parents thought it might be a good idea to get a fanny pack  but I’m not liking that idea so much. So my question is, how would you keep your cell phone on you (not the horse) in hot summer days?

They made this great cell phone holder for riders that goes around your arm or leg… it’s also good if you want to hold an ipod or anything else shaped like that!!

Here is a link to one that I found…

Well, today I was going for a hack riding one and ponying another and I realized all my breeches with pockets were in the laundry. I always carry my cell phone when I ride out, and usually put it in a pocket – but without one available I stuck it in my bra :lol::lol: !! It’s just a little phone and fit kinda down the outside where it wouldn’t bother me. Maybe not the perfect plan, but if you get desperate…:yes: !!

I only buy breeches with pockets for that very reason. the ones I wear when trail riding have a zippered pocket in the front and that’s where the phone goes.
Like the other poster, if for some reason I have other breeches on or whatever, I have been known to stick it down in my sports bra

I have a cell phone holder as well - I have this one like it very much. The strap is adjustable, and it fits nicely around both my arm and my leg depending on my preference for the day.

I’ve seen 1 that interests me that I since cannot find…It was a cell phone holder with a spot to put $ and license in it as well…just in case. If anyone sees or knows of one, please post!

I have a holder that clips to a belt or belt loop in front and hangs on the side.
Works great for anything you do, riding or working on fences.
Handy and out of the way.

I have a PDA not a phone, so it’s a little bigger. I couldn’t find a holder that I liked. I don’t want it on my arm or leg because it could easily be knocked off by brush. I don’t want it in a fanny pack. When I fall off, I usually fall on my fanny and could easily crush the PDA. I tried one of the clip-on holders and lost the PDA somewhere - apparently the clip came open.
I found a camera holder that has a fixed loop that my belt goes thru. No velcro or clip to come undone. I carry the PDA that way, on the front of my body. It closes with a zipper. It is quite protective and water-resistant too.

I have the cell phone holder that wraps around your leg.

Also in the summer I usually wear a fishing vest. I keep a hoof pick, horse cookies, cell phone/ID/insurance card, nippers for trail clearing, keys, chapstick, etc.

Timbuk2 makes some swell cell phone cases. EMS carries them (type Timbuk2 into the search). I attach mine to a belt and wear it right over my hip bone (whenever I come off I seem to land on my hip) when riding, but move it to my back when working off the horse.

I have a couple of neoprene Tune Belts. amazon.com carries them. they are just right for wearing while riding. From really small arm band styles to large enough to carry a CD player. I like the large one because I can tuck a phone, snack bar, first aid items and a map into the belt and it is much lighter than a fanny pack, and doesn’t hang so low that it bangs on the saddle cantle as I post. there is a model that also carries a water bottle.

I use pockets when I’m wearing pockets, otherwise a nifty little camera case I picked up at wally world. This is sort of triangular shaped and has several compartments that zip securely. Cell phone goes into the biggest, tissues, lip goop, money, driver license etc would fit nicely in a shallow flat compartment, and there’s room in an itty bitty pocket for some horse treats. This case has a belt loop but since I seldom wear a belt when riding I use the shoulder strap, either around my waist so the phone is out of the way toward the small of my back, or most of the time around my neck and under my left arm, so the case is more or less snug up under my left boob. It has yet to come loose, be a nuisance in any way, or get caught on saddle horn etc.

When i am worried about snakes and feel the need to pack, firearm and carry permit, cell phone, and about anything else I would care to take on a ride will fit in my fanny pack holster. But since I dont like killing snakes, shooting off a horse, or landing on the gun (did this once) during an involuntary dismount, I usually leave the ordnance at home!

Jeano…you brought up an interesting thought…I too have a pistol that I will eventually go get a concealed weapons permit as I ride a lot by myself and have had one scare last fall with a man following me out of the woods and he tried really hard not to be noticed! Thank god for my gelding having a lot better eye sight than I, as he noticed him and I acted like I didn’t.

When you ride, have you carried your pistol with you? What do you carry when you do have it? I have a mid size Glock .9mm.

As to the subject at hand, sorry folks, I wear a bright orange vest with two large pockets on it, so I shove my cell phone, cookies, things like that in it and off we go. It is really light weight material and while it isn’t very fashionable, it does do the trick. Course, it would help if I did take my cell phone with me all the time…however, I do forget or figure, heck, I don’t get signal many of the places so why have it??

Maybe a Cashel Ankle Safe? http://www.synergistsaddles.com/riding-accessories.htm

It’s kind of bulky, but I ride alone a lot and I’m allergic to bees. The big pocket perfectly carries two Epi-Pens, and then I carry my cell phone, ID, and emergency info as well.

i have the ones that wraps around the arm or leg, and i got bright yellow in case it ever fell off, not likely, but just in case. It fits great above my calf, and i am happy with it. i think it cost about $10 online.

Sticking your cell phone in your bra?

:frowning:

This can be an expensive mistake. When my cell phone stopped working I took it into Verizon to find out what was wrong. They have a sensor inside that tells them when it’s been wet; in that case, they aren’t liable. Sure enough, my phone’s sensor showed it had been soaked. We finally figured out that since it had been tucked into my bra during hot rides, I’d gotten it wet with sweat. And I don’t sweat a lot, as women go. But that was enough to wreck it. Expensive mistake there.

I tried getting a holder for it and and attaching that to my arm, my belt, or my upper calf, just below my knee. It flops annoyingly in those places. I finally ended up Running the upper strap of my half-chaps though it, without a case. That way it’s always a little bit open but at least it’s secure and doesn’t flop.

I have a band that goes around my leg. It is velcro, but it’s a very “fine, soft” velcro that is EXTREMELY sticky. Not the typical rough, crunchy feeling velcro. You can buy the straps in packs of 5 at hardware stores and stuff. Then I bought a cell phone holder that has a loop on the back. I ran the velcro strip through the loop, wrap it around my leg, snug it up, and it doesn’t budge an inch, even on an all day ride. Of course if your’e going in the water you can put it on your upper arm.

I use a Fanny pack for my phone. Plus it can hold a few other things like tissue, lipstick, etc.

I believe I took the gun with me precisely once, and when the saddle rolled, I landed whump on my back, and got a bit of a bruise from landing on the S&W 22 revolver in the fanny pack. (Mr Jeano prefers I have alternating rounds of snakeshot and hardball loaded.) A pocket sized Glock wouldve been smaller and less of a hard place to land. Glocks and revolvers are both inherently safe firearms to land on. Still. I havent bothered to pack since, almost never see a soul when riding. I might want a gun with me to fire three times as a signal that I’m in trouble, some of the places I go.

I also cant always reliably call and connect but I understand that texting works well sometimes when the call wont go thru, also the gps in yr phone can help someone find you even if you are down and out!

I usually carry a Taurus .45. I have a shoulder holster for it and that’s where I carry it. If you do carry one on your belt, carry it a little behind your hip because if it’s right on youur side (like where police officers carry it) and you fall on it you can break your hip.
Shoulder holsters aren’t for everyone, but I"m pretty proficient with it.
check your states laws, in many states if you open carry it you don’t need a permit, you only need one if it’s concealed
