Yes, they are really hard to sell. I see a lot for $2500-$3500 which I assume are newer ones, but there are a lot of used ones in very good shape for under $1000 which seems to show they do not hold their value. I had a nice one that took 6 mo to sell for $675 with a trial.
Yes, pricing seems to be all over the place. I have mine priced at $1500, which seemed to be middle of the road for the brand. I paid a little less than that, but I am taking into account PayPal fees so hoping to get back close to what I paid. On the other hand, it would be nice to just have it gone and have the money…
Hi Draftmare, I just PM’d you.
Responded!
Has anybody ever tried a “we buy saddles” place to unload a saddle?
If you haven’t sold the saddle yet, you may want to try Sporthorse – I was in there yesterday and there were about 4 other people trying saddles . I have one on trial that I am going to try on Murphy today. Salesperson said this is a busy time for selling saddles, show season just around the corner. They also take other good quality stuff on consignment too.
I just sold a reining saddle to a shop. He was a bit cagey when we were negotiating and once I googled his email address I realized it was because he was going to flip it. I got less than I could have if I’d wanted to sit on it longer, but more than I would have after paying commission if I’d taken it out to the swap meet this weekend. I’d do it again, but be sure you realize that they have to make money on it, so you’re going to get less than retail.
I’ve sold saddles outright. Usually only worth doing on something I got a deal on, because they’ll usually give you 50% of what they’re going to sell it for (or plan to sell it for) they may also not touch a more obscure brand since they’re going to try to sell it.
