Where to sell higher end saddle?

I have a brown dressage saddle I have been trying to sell since August. I have had some interest, but everybody wants to do a trial and as a private seller I just don’t feel comfortable doing that. It’s been sitting at my local tack shop since December and hasn’t been taken out on trial or even really looked at all according to the sales rep there.

I have it listed on Facebook, eBay, and Craigslist, anywhere else I might be overlooking? I am going to give it another few weeks, then I want to look into sending it to a bigger tack shop that hopefully sees more dressage-focused traffic. Any suggestions?

Also curious what everybody’s experience selling higher end bridles is. I have a Dy’on bridle that is gorgeous, but cost a pretty penny so I want a pretty penny for it. I have had zero interest. Mare goes better in a Micklem, and I would really like to get the PSoS or Schockmehole version, but gotta sell thins one first before I can spend more money. :frowning:

Pelham Saddlery and Fine Used Saddles are always recommended as good places to start. There are others (I can’t remember off the top of my head). Just stay away from Trumbull - lots of people on here report that they don’t get paid when it sells.

Wish there were more on the West Coast, though, as I’m trying to sell one, also, but don’t want to ship it across the country!

www.dfwtackexchange.com might been an option for the bridle. She sells high end accessories as well as saddles, and does an awesome job photographing items to their very best. Good luck!

If you haven’t listed on the FB group, “Dressage Saddles for sale and wanted” I would post there as well.

Good luck!

You’re in Michigan, aren’t you? Sporthorse Saddlery seems to do a booming business in used saddles.

@RatWrangler i am not OP but have a couple nice saddles to sell in northern IN. Where is this place?

I’ve used Fine Used Saddles several times with good results. They are very realistic about pricing your saddle, so it sells in good time

In New Hudson, near Novi in the Metro Detroit area. They have a website with contact info.

Thank you!

@HJdaydream Thanks, I will look into her for my bridle. I think part of my problem is I am really rotten at taking pictures of bridles. It always ends up looking like a pile of straps. Right now I am using a stock photo and a photo of it on my horse for the ads.

@MissAriel I do have it listed there, and just about every other dressage and general english group I could find.

@RatWrangler Oh good suggestion. I will have to check into them. They aren’t so far away that I couldn’t drive over there on a weekend. I do know there is a lot more money on that side of the state than the area I am in.

I sold my Albion saddle through Hannah at Hunt Country Saddlery in NJ, when I was in KY. She was wonderful to work with, the saddle sold fast, and she takes a lower commission than other options I looked at. She has a bunch of saddle fitters across the country that help sell the saddles too, which I think helps the whole process.

Brown dressage tack is getting a lot more popular but still a hard sell. The seller must be realistic about the pricing and not expect it to go for the same price as an equal saddle in black. The market is much much smaller and they do tend to sit for a while.

I would be inclined to stick with one of the larger shops because your saddle is brown. The market is much more limited so you probably have a better shot at someone looking for a brown saddle. Pelham has a trial period on all new or consignment saddles (I don’t know about Fine Used Saddles and others), which could work in your favor since a serious buyer would want to look before they bought. There have been quite a few horror stories on COTH about eBay buyers cheating you.

I used the Maryland Tack Exchange (based in FL) for my County jump saddle and was very happy with them.

Is this the Hastilow you just got?

Oh no, that’s my baby. I am selling the JRD I used last year while I waited for the Hastilow.

Yeah, I’m likely going to be taking a brand new saddle over there as I can’t return it to Classic since it’s past the 10 day return policy, even though it’s brand new and never been ridden in, didn’t even come close to fitting the horse I’ll be riding.

Ah, that explains it. Softer market for JRD. I would email Patricia at Fine Used Saddles if anyone could sell that it would be her.

Ugh. I would not recommend anybody doing business with her unless it’s something super basic. She also does decent saddle repair work. I always warn people to know exactly what you are looking for and then to stick to it otherwise she will bully you into buying something else!

Yeah, I’d actually bought a lot of stuff from her in the past, but after this cluster I won’t spend a dime there ever again.
