Which Horse Insurance Company do you like for your performance horse?

Mine is up for renewal…

I use Horse Insurance Specialists out of Texas for this horse and my previous horse. My current horse is currently covered by the Hartford via this company. I had one large claim getting his endoscoped for ulcers and treatment when he was under his former owner’s contract, which excludes this treatment from my contract. But they are always very easy to deal with. Luckily, knock on wood, I haven’t had another claim. This probably doesn’t help much!

I was always really happy with Blue Bridle when I was insuring my horses.

I’ve previously used Markel with no issues, but this time around I was really impressed with the responsiveness and friendliness of the EMO agent when getting a quote, so I went with them.

By the way, I’ve foregone major medical with the big names in lieu of ASPCA’s pet insurance of all places—it covers almost all vet care and you can even add some preventative coverage. My last claim was paid out in two days, before I even had to pay the vet.

How did you do that for a horse? I only see dog and cat as options on the ASPCA pet insurance web page.

I had a mortality claim with Markel this February, and feel it was handled well. I’ll use them again if I need to insure any future horses.

I’ve used Great American and have had great experiences. I’ve had a full value medical claim that resulted in a mortality claim, which was handled very well. They quickly paid me so I could pay the clinic and didn’t make me pay it and get reimbursed. Recently, I’ve had a soft tissue injury and it was handled easily as well with payment issued in about 2 weeks of submission of the bills.

This is such a great option, thanks for sharing! I have been thinking about insuring my mare but she isn’t “worth” much & I didn’t want the pressure of a mortality policy forcing me to do all the things in an emergency situation.

I will second Great American; I used them to insure a horse prior to importing last spring. Sadly things went very wrong, apparently before transport but post the PPE. GAIG was outstanding, on top of things quickly, good communication both with me and the Univ of Fla. The horse was euthanized 4 weeks after shipping, and the only thing that delayed payout on the mortality was waiting for necropsy results. Due to the virus situation, I never even laid eyes on him in person. The seller lied to me about several things, the vets across the pond either didn’t recognize or covered up a problem, but the insurance company was awesome.

I’ve had The Hartford (with Broadstone as the agent) for several years now. I’ve never had to make a major medical claim but did unfortunately have to make a mortality claim a few months ago. They were terrific to work with, very sympathetic, and I had my check within a week of the horse being euthanized.

Hartford gets my vote. Have had to make claims the past 2 years and was reimbursed promptly. Like any insurance, there are deductibles and fine print, so they dont cover everything, but I feel that they delt with me fairly.

Thank you Tha Ridge - this is a fantastic option!

Hartford has been the best underwriting company to work with. Agent doesnt matter as much as who writes the policy.

I so wish they offered this in New Hampshire! Unfortunately they don’t cover us.
