I have been very interested in going fox hunting for a while now and would like to know which hunts in Kentucky would be most welcoming to a newcomer! I would like to hound walk/cub during the summer to get my horses used to the atmosphere and then attend a few during the season. If anyone could make some suggestions that would point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!
Well, there are only a few now: Long Run Hounds/Woodford, Iroquois, and Camargo. Where are you located and what is your riding experience?
Depending on the hunt, hound walking and cubbing are only open to members, so you would be stuck with introducing yourself and your mount during the regular season.
As as I understand it, it is to protect first year hounds. They are just learning their job and learning about how to maneuver around a group of horses. The last thing the huntsman wants is for a young hound to be kicked and then NOT want to pack in when necessary.
Some me hunts will offer off season group trail rides and fox hunting “camps” open to potential members.
BigMick- I am located in the Lexington area. I have been riding for 18 years - mainly hunter/jumpers, but really do a little bit of everything, just depends on the horse I am sitting on (I do what the greenie shows the most potential for). I spend more time riding my horses outside of the arena than in. I take them to masterson and shaker village when I can find people to ride with.
Ever since moving away from a career in horses, my equine connections have dwindled to just a few. Hence coming to COTH and asking. I am at a private farm and love being there, it just gets a little lonely sometimes! I feel as though hunting would check off the social box, the keeping the horse fit box, and of course the fun box :).
Thanks for the info jawa!
EmeraldRose,
I hunt with Long Run Hounds and Woodford is in the process of merging with us which is very exciting as we’re retaining the Woodford hunt country (Shaker Village, Crab Orchard) in the Lexington area in addition to our existing territory in Shelby and Oldham.
I suspect that most of our summer hound walks will occur close to the kennels (Shelby Co.) and they are pretty open to non-members joining in.
Hunting with us would definitely check the social box - we are LOADS of fun!!!
I don’t have any info on Iroquois Hounds and we almost never do joint meets with them.
I guest hunt frequently with Camargo which has the majority of their territory in Owen County (NKY) and some in the Cincy area (Indian Hills). They are lovely people to hunt with as well.
I’ll send you a PM with my contact info as well as our Hunt Secretary. She can fill you in on protocol for joining us this summer.
I hunted with Iroquois this Fall, the weekend they hosted the JNAFHC. I found them to be a lovely and friendly group of folks. We hunted over gorgeous territory and hounds worked admirably. I have a friend who lives between Lexington and Paris and everyone was very encouraging for her to come out and participate. I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out to them if I lived there.
Thanks for the responses!!
Thanks for the contact BigMick
We just had a joint meet with Long Run and they are a super fun bunch, well mounted and friendly.
Hi
Hello folks. I’m new to the forum and I’m looking forward to learning more from members. I’ve hunted Africa twice–first time in the Cape Province in 2008 and again last June with my son, who is in the second grade. We hunted the Limpopo Province and had a fantastic time. Our outfitter took great care of us and paid particular attention to my boy, who managed to take a zebra, steenbuck, and warthog. We lost his wildebeast, although our tracker tried half a day to find it. Like everyone has explained to me, you can’t go to Africa just once. So, we’re planning on returning June 2011. Between us, we still have a few species left and some remaining space on the wall to fill.
