Which Irish Sport Horse and Irish Draught Stallions to breed to.
All these lovely guys!

For those of you with the smaller TB mares did they handle foaling well when bred to the full Irish? My one made is only 15.2h. I was leaning towards the ISH for her due to her size, but would prefer a full Draught as ideal cross.
My TB is 15.2 and does fine foaling to RIDs - she is currently in foal to Steeped in Luck. She has had foals by RIDs - Dandelion Diamond Rebel, Cradilo, Bridon Belfrey, and Glenlara

ETA as others stated, Playland uses arabs with a RID

Well I think I am going to buy at least a couple doses of Touch Of The Blues while it is still available. But I am on the fence about the second one! Here are the mares if that helps.

Please don’t judge my form. I was jumping with a fractured tibia. Side note we were the 3’6 Division Champions that weekend

OK, I keep coming back to BRIDON BEALE STREET for my full TB. So many choices! But I must say I was really hoping for a grey…

Now I’m NOT a grey fan (please don’t bash-tough experience working for a nut job woman one summer with barn full of grey arabs who layed down in their own poop daily, whose owner demanded they look show ring ready for simple pasture turnout)…had I been willing to risk a grey, I had my eye on Brandenburg’s Windstar (who unfortunately had to be put down a couple years ago).

fwiw, I know Liam (Beale Street) very well, was there when he stepped off the trailer all those years ago. He has been bred to a LOT of very different mares and not all are super (how could they be?) but all of them are a improvement over the dam. He has been bred to some mares that should not be bred IMO and produced horses that are vast improvements. Even the ones that were on the hotter side as youngsters are settling in and becoming solid citizens at age 5+. And some real super stars are starting to emerge as they get out there and start showing. And the offspring are also proving to be very sound.

Liam himself hangs out around the barn causing no trouble, and could be ridden by just about anyone.

I have always loved the horse, but as his first babies became ugly yearlings and 2 year olds, wasn’t sure what he would produce. As they mature they are making me a fan.

If I get no physical improvement over the dam, I will have a more talented horse than I will ever need! I WOULD like a more laid back attitude! As for the ugly yearling stage…guess I will buy a large paper bag to put over the horse when it hits that stage!

I don’t think you can go wrong with Liam. Mountain Pearl horses are wonderful. I also had a mare out of the same dam as Liam and she’s a great horse as well.

If you really want grey, the other that would be in my top picks is Dandelion Diamond Rebel. My IDSH by him won all the FEH classes he entered and also placed in top 3 for USDF classes. Amateur owner started and shown. She hacks him out alone in real rural land with wild pigs, mt lion, bears and the most he was done was to get tense when a group of piglets were creating a ruckus in the underbrush (so could hear, but not see) I’ve never met a bad one - lots of pics but he his now owned by a friend of the previous owner and is now a Master’s hunt horse. http://www.breezyhollow.com/html/dandelion.html

I am not an RID expert (disclaimer) - but I am a big fan of Steeped in Luck. He belongs to friends of mine, and I have seen him as a young colt just started US, by yet another friend of mine.
She had him in her barn and has nothing but good to say about him. She also has two youngsters by him out of TB mares, and they are both lovely, very good movers, great temperaments.
He is a beautiful horse, a lovely mover, who competes successfully in dressage, and has a wonderful temperament.
I think crossed with a TB you would most likely get what you are looking for.

This same friend also has a colt by Eamon (SIL) out of one of her TB mares who she is thinking of keeping a stallion. She is concentrating on starting him on his performance career (eventing) right now, but may breed him to outside mares in 2014.
Both Steeped in Luck and this colt (not sure of his show name) are in ON, with no problem shipping fresh semen to the US.

I have 2 mares (1 TB & 1 RID) in foal to him and definitely no problems getting semen into the US. Either fresh or frozen - they do both at least for SIL

Yes, but will it be sitting in Memphis when you need it? Just kidding, an unkind, undeserved dig at FedEx.
YOu and I have the exact same taste! I narrowed my search to both Steeped in Luck and Bridon Beale Street, ended up going with Bridon Beale Street, we’ll see what I get in April! Mare caught on the first cycle, and Connie was super easy to coordinate with for the breeding!
Oooh good to know! I find one of the hardest parts of breeding is dealing with the stallion owners, nice to know who is easy to work with.

What breed is your mare? Can’t wait to see baby!

haha! truer words were never spoken!

I see Mountain Pearl mentioned - who is also the sire of To Be Sure from Canada - Anybody heard of MP since he was returned to Ireland and what is he doing and has he had any get? He was a beautiful horse, beautiful form and passed his temperament along reliably. I have his grandson.

If you want a grey, go for it. There are plenty of nice grey IDs. Dandelion Diamond Rebel is lovely. There are plenty of others if he isn’t what you want. Check the list of approved stallions on the IDHSNA website.

Pearl is with Eddie Meehan in co. Sligo and looks fabulous for his age! I believe he has bred a large number of mares since being back in Ireland. He is still owned by Pat Jensen, who lives here in the U.S.

Have you looked at Bridon Beale Street? http://www.lonetreefarm.net/stallions.htm

He’s number one on my list to breed for an irish sport horse. I’ve met him in person and he is truly gorgeous, and quite the gentleman. He has the best temperament and jump!
MAJOR DROOL! Please fly him to my living room, the hay bales are on the way!!

What about KEC Double Diamond? He’s always caught my eye, but haven’t heard much about him. Has anyone used him?

My Mountain Pearl baby

Bartholomew Fair - RIDSH
Mountain Pearl x Juanita Belle (TB)

I never post but lurk a lot and couldn’t resist showing off my boy when I saw MP mentioned…

Bart was foaled the year before MP left for Ireland. If I’d known he was leaving I would have rebred the mare. Great temperament and amazing jump. His dam had the amazing jump too, so can’t give all the credit to MP, but he definitely improved the brain.

Knockaderry Pearl is my RID by Pearl and my dark mare is her daughter (so MP granddaughter)
http://www.eponairishfarm.com/Our_Horses.html

I thought they still had frozen Pearl available

What about KEC Double Diamond - I have only seen (in person) 2 pure bred colts and they were both drool worthy. The pics of the IDSH I’ve seen have looked like very nice crosses - very athletic and I hear good things about temperament. He is in my very short list for 2014 with my Mountain Pearl RID

Good to know! I was looking on their site last night, and I liked what I saw with his offspring. If I were to use him it’d be on a TB or TB x Conn and it looks like his crossbred offspring are of moderate bone, but not too heavy. Seems that quite a few are eventing.
