Which Irish Sport Horse and Irish Draught Stallions to breed to.

The search has begun. I am looking for a either Irish Fraught or Irish Sport Horse to breed to my one mare, and an Irish Sport Horse to breed to my other mare.

Currently looking into Formula One, RID Touch Of The Blues (frozen only), RID Dandelions Diamond Rebel, Corcullen.

Both mare’s are very athletic, are being shown, and have great work ethics. I would like a less hunter build on my one but that is it.

I can post photos of the mares , though I think most are under saddle

Have you looked at Bridon Beale Street? http://www.lonetreefarm.net/stallions.htm

He’s number one on my list to breed for an irish sport horse. I’ve met him in person and he is truly gorgeous, and quite the gentleman. He has the best temperament and jump!

What performance goals are you hoping to get for the foals?

Oh I like him quite a bit! Though I know this is picky but I am hoping to avoid chestnut. I happen to like them, but I have found they are harder to sell, and if it came to me selling the offspring in the future I know how hard to sell a chestnut made can be.

Blugal- I am hoping for a nice mid level eventer type, probably not more then Prelim or possibly Intermediate, that I can also take out to hunter paces and some local hunter derbies.

We have an ISH gelding (was a breeding stallion briefly, but we gelded due to the economy…not any issues with the horse) by Touch of the Blues RID o/o a Seattle Slew grandaughter that I LOVE to death. He is my "next, best riding horse!! Personally, though…I’d go with an ISH (1/2 TB) for “that” level of eventing. We have two daughters of Seattle Blues, one is 3/4 TB who is probably one of the nicest horses we have ever bred!! She looks and moves like a pure TB, but has the disposition of a lap dog!! Almost all TOTB’s (ours for sure) are black or very dark brown with chrome. GREAT temperaments, too!!

What a nice looking boy. He looks just like what I want for DH someday. Which I’m fine with one of the foals being heavier as a more field hunter type.

With the death of the long format I’m not as concerned about a heavier horse, though I don’t know if I will ever go Above Prelim anymore due to not caring for how the sport has changed. I am loving the hunter paces and derbies though

There are a lot of very nice RID and sporthorse stallions to chose from… I have been so happy with my touch of the blues purebred that I recently bought his brother . As an adult amateur I really value temperament and soundness. My 13 year old ( bought as a yearling and trained by myself) has done novice level eventing, hunter pacing, combined driving, trails, and now we are focusing on our dressage and schooling 2nd. This year when I decided I wanted to raise another, I specifically looked for a touch of the blues baby. If you are looking for resale in the adult ammie market I don’t think you could go wrong with him…

I love the Dandelion Diamond Rebel offspring. I bred a TB to him an got a wonderful colt that is doing both dressage and eventing in CA with his amateur owner. He is a solid 16.3 out of a small mare, so he can throw his size. My RID mare has had 2 foals by him and both have great temperaments- 1 just started hunting and another just being backed. He is homozygous grey, so foal will be grey

Love Bridon Beale St as posted (even though you said avoid chestnut) If you want similar eventing accomplishments in a bay package, check out Jaunty Star http://www.dkhirishdraughtsporthorses.ca/stallions/

If you like Touch of the Blues lines, but prefer fresh there is a recently imported black stallion is a smaller size (15.3) http://www.stargazeyfarms.com/StargazeysRomanceAtShortNotice/

Bridon Beale St. and my mare are both offspring of Mountain Pearl who produces nice movement and jump with a great amateur temperament. There may still be frozen or his grey son KF Mountain Chieftan

Playland farm breeds many eventers and dressage horses from their RID stallion from Clover Hill lines http://www.playlandequestriancenter.com/PL_Diamond.html

A friend and COTH member has used RIDSH Kings Ransome and been very happy with what he produced http://www.ballytrimirishstud.com/

Another event producer is Braveheart RID http://www.deanfieldfarm.com/

There is a bay Irish stallion that I believe stands in BC who competes in show jumping to Grand Prix. I can’t for the life of me remember his name although I believe it is a “C” name, perhaps with Clover in it. I bet if you looked up registries, you’d find him.

There is an ISH (by Mountain Pearl ID, out of a TB/CSH mare) called To Be Sure also in BC, available by frozen. I have only seen one offspring, competed by a friend at Pre-Training (she is in her 60s though and only goes Pre-Training now). Her name is To Be True, if you wanted to find photos you could check out totemphotographics for the show Island 22 Horse Trials.

I’m hoping to breed to Steeped In Luck… And I have a lovely ISH by Its the Luck of the Irish.

Did you mean Clover Cliste? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARE67vMSpnM I’ve always liked the looks of him. I couldn’t get their website to come up though.

Bridon Beale Street is one I’d consider using. I always liked the look of his sire. I’m sure you could sell chestnut with chrome

I also like Steeped in Luck: http://www.pairadoxfarm.com/page/page/2683044.htm

I have a mare in foal to Flexible this year, but am aware of the risk of having a more sensitive tempered foal.

Yes, that’s the one. I found another listing for him with (the same owner) Adele Mahaffy; the phone number listed appears to be current.

I’ve loved him, but wasn’t sure if he was still available.

My friend just had a mare do her 1st prelim event by Jack of Hearts http://www.klearyfield.com/jackofhearts.html

go for broke…

and try to new guy:

http://www.windbrookfarmsporthorses.com/site/Highland_Imperius.html

then you can tell us all about it!

of the eventing stallions we get to see out West in the barns, campaigning and producing offspring that are completing, I’ve not been impressed with liam (bridon beale street). There are some jack of hearts and some king of hearts from Slew dams who compete locally and seem like worth the investment.

Another vote for Playland Farm’s stallion, Diamond. My daughter has a 5 year from Playland Farm. She bought him as a 2 year old. He is been sweet, smart, sensible and athletic.

All these lovely guys!

For those of you with the smaller TB mares did they handle foaling well when bred to the full Irish? My one made is only 15.2h. I was leaning towards the ISH for her due to her size, but would prefer a full Draught as ideal cross.

Playland breeds their stallion to a lot of Arabian mares, to produce some small IDSH babies. The Arabian mares don’t seem to have any foaling issues. You can look at their website and Facebook page to get some idea of what Diamond produces.

Blugal mentioned To Be Sure - he competed in the jumpers but the outstanding thing about him is his consistency in producing horses that have the most exceptional minds - each and every one of them, doesn’t matter what mare is used. He is 1/2 Irish Draught/1/2 Tb. Every rider gets off their horse with a smile on their face. I have one.

YOu and I have the exact same taste! I narrowed my search to both Steeped in Luck and Bridon Beale Street, ended up going with Bridon Beale Street, we’ll see what I get in April! Mare caught on the first cycle, and Connie was super easy to coordinate with for the breeding!
