Which is better: Nutrena SafeChoice or Triple Crown Senior Feed?

My 27 yo gelding has been getting TC Senior for about 9 years now. It is soaked. We just added TCAlpha Lox these past 2 years. He also gets second cut hay. His new barn wants to feed him Nutrena Safe Choice. What do you think?

I would stick with the TC Senior - fixed formula, much lower NSC - 11.7 in the Senior as opposed to 20 in the SafeChoice. If he’s maintaining condition well on the TC, I wouldn’t mess with it.

There are multiple Safe Choice products, so assuming you mean the Senior, then hands down I’d go with TC Sr for the reasons Amy stated.

SC Senior isn’t a TERRIBLE product, but Triple Crown is pretty well accepted to be quite a bit better.

If the TC is tough to source for some reason, Pro Elite Senior is very similar to the Triple Crown Senior and would be a good alternative.

I’m assuming there is no Southern States in NY though?

The OP’s location says CT, and we definitely have ProElite here. There are also quite a few dealers in NY. I can’t link directly to the dealer locator, but it’s here on this page: https://proelitehorsefeed.com/

Ooops, I didn’t realize I hadn’t scrolled all the way to the top and only saw the first reply which is from Amy in NY

They have dealers all the way to Maine

Good to know - a few people in NY I talked to had no idea what SS was.

I am in CT. Here is another choice to look into. Poulin E-TEC Fiber Max has a formula very close to Triple Crown Senior and runs about $9 less a bag. Made in Vermont, it is considered a top shelf grain and is in the company’s E-TEC (low carb) line of grains. NSC is 17 percent. I switched my horse over from Triple crown to Fiber Max for the winter because his reaction to Triple Crown had been to shovel it into his water bucket instead of eating it. No such problem here. He loves it and looks great. This year the barn added it to their Nutrena SafeChoice for horses needing to keep the weight on through the cold weather, and it worked beautifully.
