Which stallion to choose...

I haven’t really posted here a lot, was referred here by a friend to read up on Jill from Gray Fox Farm. I bought a breeding to Redwine two years ago, well, two years later still no baby. First year started off well, mare was clean and ready to go, tried four times but some how got a utero infection (which now makes sense). Got her cleaned up for the next year, tried again this year three times but no luck. So we got a biopsy and a culture done just to make sure it wasn’t the mare. Mare is clean, vet couldn’t understand why she couldn’t get prego. Well, now we know.

So, I am looking into stallions to breed next year. Cross your fingers and hopefully I can finally get a baby after waiting FOUR years! I have picked a few out, no particular order. I have to keep my budget in mind due to the fact that I still have vet bills to pay off and recovering from the loss of the whole Redwine thing. Not looking for any particular color, just nice conformation, temperament and some bling. Looking to breed for a nice AO hunter.

Anyway, if you can give some input on the stallions and what you think that’d be great. OR if you have other suggestions that’d be great too!

Here’s a picture of the mare, sorry it’s kind of a bad picture. She’s my friends mare but she says ok to post it. She is a premium KWPN-NA mare by Just the Best.

Thanks!!

The mare is very nice. You might want to ask Tish Quirk, who stands her sire, who she might recommend.

I have a King de Coquerie filly and have been very pleased with mine. My interactions with the Tolas were very easy, and the semen was excellent quality. King packed his amateur owner after doing the jumpers in Europe and the 4’ hunters with Tammy Provost here.

You should also consider Sir Wanabi; I have a yearling by him. His owner is also excellent to work with. A Sir Wanabi filly was just champion two year old at Warrenton. I love the temperament on mine!

Good luck; I hope you have a more positive breeding experience this year!

Consider our stallion Thanks for the Gold. He is by the legendary stallion All the Gold who was recently inducted into the Hunter Hall of Fame. He has his Dad’s wonderful floaty movement and fantastic jump. We collected him the first time this last spring.

I second the suggestion to speak with Tish Quirk.

Also - since the mare is a KWPN mare, I would highly recommend breeding her to a stallion that will allow her foal to be registered - if not with KWPN, at least with a registry that recognizes her KWPN papers, and with one that does parentage verification via DNA comparison on EVERY foal. Having registration papers may make a heck of a difference in the foal’s future, esp. as it get older, and esp. if a filly.

You also may want to take a look at the current Top Hunter sire standings. The USEF rankings have to be taken with a grain of salt, but they do give some indication of the stallions whose offspring are having success in each discipline. At the moment, Popeye K is standing #3 on the list, and he is KWPN approved for hunter breeding, so he may be one to consider.

Please take a look at Amazing as well…he fits all your criteria, and his foals can get KWPN register B papers. His first two crops of foals have shown that he is really stamping his offspring in build and temperament. And he himself truly lives up to his name in every sense of the word.

I will third the suggestion to talk with Tish. I have a gelding by Just The Best out of a bay TB mare. My boy is so lovely!!! A couple socks and a nice star and snip.

She stands two very nice stallions for your consideration.

What about Apiro?

http://silvercreekfarms.com/apiro.html

A client bred her sister to our stallion Beste Gold to Just The Best Lovely combination , might work in reverse for you ,and he is very fertile.

I also like Sir Wanabi and Amazing is proving to be a nice sire. Dallas is doing well competing, I would be more interested to breed a palomino or chestnut mare to him

I like Roc USA quite a bit, I hope he’s still on your wish list.

I am a huge sucker for a flashy palomino, but I am leery of stallions that have neither conformation shots, performance records nor pedigree information readily available to mare owners. Looks like this guy doesn’t have too many foals on the ground; at least not many that are promoted on his website. Seems like you have a nice mare; I would go with one of the more proven stallions that others have suggested. I have a Sir Wanabi yearling that I love, and have seen the stallion in person several times; I would highly recommend him as well.

I will also go for Sir Wanabi. I love my filly by him…soooo sweet, gorgeous mover, and just soo dang pretty. If I do sell her, it will be one of the hardest sales in my life I do believe. She is just everything I wanted.

I also like the Balt’Amour stallion, he really caught my eye. I like his babies, too.

Sir Wannabe is gorgeous, too. He’s got an interesting head with those light eyes.

If you are breeding for a 3’6" horse, I would make sure that the stallion you use has produced 3’6" horses. I doubt some on your list have done so, perhaps just because they are young. However, if you are breeding for yourself and not looking to sell the offspring, I would try to “stack the deck” in your favor.

Of the ones you listed, I like King. Had not seen him before, but has some blood so you won’t end up with a tank (like I think you would with some on your list or ones whom others have suggested…but that’s personal…I don’t like riding tanks!).

The other on your list I like for that mare is Balta’czar. Someone else mentioned Apiro. I co-own a 3 y.o. by Apiro out of Sea Accounts’ dam Dance Account. He is lovely. Great mind, super jump with awesome front end. He just finished 3 overall (1 point out of Res. Ch.) at the IHF East Coast and was 2nd and 3rd over fences.

Here are links to his two rounds.

I also think that discussing with Tish would be a good idea.

Sorry about your experience with JB. There are good stallion owners…or at least we try awfully hard, anyway!!!

I agree with VB and others to contact Tish.
She is a wonderful, knowlegable, horsewoman with years of breeding experience, and can give you honest informed suggestions and opinions.
Good luck this time!

Thanks everyone, I did have Apiro on the list I guess I forgot to list him!

I LOVE Sir Wanabi, but he’s located in Canada and we like to stay within the USA b/c I was told customs between the countries is hard and more expensive to ship??

I still can’t make up my mind yet, it’s so hard to choose after having my heart set on one stallion for the past two years. You know??

In my humble opinion…

Daktota VDL is an excellent choice for hunter breeders! Nice size, tight and clean in front, careful behind and a wonderful temperament. He could win the hack in the hunter arena along with presenting a superb technique over fences.

One to be considered I think!

Cheers!

Well, I am partial to Roc USA as I have 2 foals from him.

One is 4 and he will debut in the baby greens this fall, the other is 5 months old.

Mare is a petite tb mare that I showed in the hunters.

I will post some FB pics because I don’t know how to post other pictures on this darn iPad!

You can also go to my YouTube name and it will show you them both as babies and the 4 year old growing up, flat, jumping and such. (samotis1128)

It will at least give you an idea of the type he produces. The 4 year old is a little over 16.1 (mom is 15.3 and he was her first foal) he will probably finish 16.2.

The new foal is huge so I expect him to be dads size!

Hope this helps! I love my guys. They are both hunter types, great conformation and very athletic. Roc USA also has foals showing in high level jumpers as well as conformation hunters so either direction the foal goes, it will jump!

If you have any questions you can pm me! It is so exciting shopping for stallions!

There are some great stallions posted here and with the right mare they will all make great foals. Key is finding the right one for you!

Lovely mare. Have you thought about Westporte? He is just across the border in Canada and I was able to get a shipment with not much added expense.

She had said she wanted bling.

I love westporte, but bling he won’t usually give.

Shipping semen FROM Canada to the US is simple and straightforward, and customs is rarely a problem.
Shipping it the other way (due to CEM) is much more difficult.

Dreamscape Farm (in BC) have some lovely young stallions to consider.
Risingstar Farm also has some new lovely young stallions.
You have lots of time to look and ponder!
