Which winter barn coat?

I’m looking for a good, really warm and waterproof winter coat. Mostly for barn chores (inside and out) but also for occasional riding.

I really like the look of the Mountain Horse Windsor, and their Stanford looks good too. It’s hard to tell what the differences are and which one is warmer. If anyone has advice on those two, or other recommendations I’d really appreciate it!

LL Bean Winter Warmer COAT (as opposed to the JACKET). You may have a problem with the zipper but it would be worth it to have the zipper replaced. I would call LL Bean to complain if you have a problem with the zipper and ask them if they will pay to have your zipper replaced instead of sending the coat back to them. You may have to order a zipper and pay someone to put it in–that’s the only drawback with this coat. Order a size larger so you can layer under it.

I got one of last year’s Carhartt’s from their website. It fits well and is warm - nice and fuzzy. I may pick up one for Mom in her size for next Christmas.

Mountain Horse, hands down. Lots of pockets, wash well but gotta hang to dry, which usually happens overnight with the heat on.

Bean’s just can’t take barn chores and clean up to look clean. They always look dirty.

Carhart’s are just too stiff, with little ease.

I have the Mountain Horse Windsor. It. Is. Amazing.

It’s so warm, has a zillion pockets that zipper closed, very flattering (so many coats are warm but look and feel really bulky–this one looks nice), perfect for riding in (not too long.) A lot of us where I board have them. SmartPak had them on sale for like $150 a day or so ago.

The MH Windsor. Worth every penny. I have shoulder issues and am uncomfortable in tight and heavy winter clothes but this jacket is so lightweight that I don’t have issues. I usually only wear a long sleeve t-shirt under and it’s warm enough to about 35-40 degrees and then I only wear a lightweight fleece. Love this jacket and it’s cute too. I wore it to a couple football games this year too.

LlBean. Select your coat based on your weather. I have one of their extra warm, down filled, waterproof (?Baxster State Parka) for extreme cold (0-25 degrees). Generally, I just wear one of their oilskin type down vests for barn chores. LlBean has good waterproof gloves that I wear for barn chores.

I love my Carhartt. It is the warmest coat I have ever owned and is still in good shape after 10 years. It was stiff to begin with but at this point is soft and comfortable. It is not supposed to be waterproof but even in a steady rain, I have never gotten wet under it.

I love my Berne (Carhartt look-alike) coat–very warm, especially when layered over fleece. Does a great job resisting wind and water (even though it’s not technically “water-proof”). Biggest drawback: getting too hot, especially if I wear it in the car/truck (windows down, anyone?) or leave it on when I go indoors, i.e., at the grocery store etc.

I have a Carhartt that I usually wear daily until it hits about 0*. It’s the only one that I don’t sweat heavily under when I’m cleaning stalls or working with the babies. I’ve worn it to many foalings where I get utterly DISGUSTING, and I can throw it in the washer/dryer with no problems. It cleans up wonderfully. I don’t have any issues with getting wet when it rains either. I usually wear long underwear, a fleece, and my Carhartt.

When it starts to get bitterly cold, though, I have a coat from Apocalypse Designs in Fairbanks, Alaska. That thing is a BEAST. I have to be careful layering under it though, because it’ll be in a negatives and I’ll sweat like crazy if things get physical. I can usually wear long underwear and a sweatshirt and it’s perfect. My only, only, only complaint is that it’s nowhere near attractive.

I have this Mountain Horse coat: http://www.doversaddlery.com/the-original-mountain-horse®-winter-jacket/p/X1-40198/

It’s really warm, tons of pockets, kind of ugly but who cares. Dover usually has it on sale for $150.
