White Line - Oxine question

My horse now has White Line in both fronts. I had some White Lightning left and used it for the first soaking but I ran out and ordered some Oxine AH and citric acid. I made a batch but it never turned yellow, so I’m thinking it didn’t activate?

I went ahead and used it since it had been 4 days since I soaked but I got some copper sulfate from a friend and used it to soak the next time since I wasn’t sure and would hate to just get his feet wetter and softer.

I used oxine with vinegar.

Did you use equal parts oxine/vinegar?

I found an old thread talking about this and soaked him again today. I’m planning on soaking every other day and getting the girl that feeds in the morning to spray copper sulphate/vinegar solution before he goes out. I also found out that he has thin soles and Keratex was recommended so I’m doing that in the evening when he comes in.

Is this overkill? The new farrier said the white line looks like most of it is gone now but some appears to be under the sole. I don’t want to kill him with kindness but I don’t want it to get worse either.

That’s a tough question — I tend to overkill. However with the soles being thin, I think I Would stop soaking to address the white line. I would take a tiny paint brush, like you would get at the auto parts store (1/2" - 3/4"), dip it in your white line solution and just paint the actual white line.

I would use the Keretex every day for awhile or at least every other day. I also wait until I bring my foundered horse in at night to put the Keretex on. He has progressed to where I only use it 3X/week.

also, FWIW, my vet recommended putting my foundered horse on Nanric’s “Extra Strength Biotin 100”. The horse has been on it a little over a year and it has made a difference. It was developed by Dr. Ric Redden, an equine podiatrist. A tub lasts about three months I think.

Best wishes on getting your horse’s hooves sound:)

I use dura sole. I put it in a plastic hoof paint can (you can get them at dover) with it’s brush and paint everyday over the bottom of the hoof. Usually three Dura soles fill up the can. been doing this for years to keep the white line under control during the wet months.

Make sure the stall is super clean and dry too. That helps a lot.

Two for Keratex, one for Durasole  Durasole is definitely cheaper.

He’s actually out 24/7 and comes in to eat his timothy pellets and vitamin/mineral twice a day. Dry lot at night grazing muzzle in the day time. I’m going to strip his stall tonight and get it ready for tomorrow. It’s supposed to rain and he needs to dry out.

He doesn’t like being stalled but hopefully the barn will still be standing when I get there after work Tuesday evening.

Thank you both.
