I know white tape on braids used to be really old fashion, but I was wondering if it is coming back in style? I have a couple horses in my braiding string that would look fantastic with white tape, but I want to make sure they don’t stand out for the wrong reasons.
I have no clue if it’s coming back in style, but you could always be the one to try and restart the trend! For me, personally, I have no desire to create extra work for myself. Plus, I feel like it would be even harder for me to make sure they look pretty and even with the white tape calling attention to what may already be a mediocre braiding job. But if you’re really good at braiding and can make them look smashing, why not go for it?
I loved braiding with white yarn. It added just a bit of flash, without being too much. To use that though, you do have to be a pretty good braider, as no covering it up with tape.
Hmmm…I wonder if I could do white tape on the black and black tape on the white part of my horse’s mane. That would be kind of cool.
There’s no reason you can’t do it if you like it!
I’m not sure if it’s coming back into style though. Button and cobra type braids are all the rage and i think the tape would kind of ruin the effect.
I used to do white tape on a black mane. It can help make the braids look more even if they are slightly different lengths.
I prefer white tape on braids that lay against the neck rather than button braids above the neck as I think they look “wobbly.”
Different braiding styles (button, laying flat, cobra, etc.), different braid sizes, and different numbers of braids all affect the look of the horse’s neck. The best thing is to braid up the horse and take a picture of them in a bridle and moving around on the bit. My horse looked really good in 20 braids laying flat at lower levels but as we went up the levels I found doing fewer braids and making them more like button braids helped make the shape and length of his neck look better than I was actually riding the neck.
I wouldn’t particularly say that white tape is “coming back,” but if it looks good on your horse, I think it will be admired more than criticized. The few times that I have seen it, I and others have liked it.
kcmel - I had a white horse (ok “grey”) years ago. I used black tape on his braids (this was when white tape on braids was still a thing) and my trainer was horrified. She told me to never do that again and use white tape or no tape at all! I never did find out why, but I learned it was a terrible faux pas.
I used to tape my horse’s braids. He was a very plain bay and I thought it was a nice touch and it did show off his neck.
But that was back before everybody got all bedazzled and our options were a bit more limited.
I think any braid style looks good if it is beautifully executed.
