Who has dealt with a seroma?

I have a 5 year old gelding who slipped and fell and ended up with a large bit of road rash inside his left stifle. Thankfully, he is sound but it has taken a couple of weeks for the scrapes and bruises to heal. Fast forward to a few days ago when a seroma showed up literally overnight at the base of the injury. It is currently about the size of a softball. In 30 years, I have never had to deal with a seroma, so I’m looking for people’s experiences who have. My vet isn’t really worried about it and said that lancing them is a last resort as it can cause them to be difficult to manage.

My questions for the ones who have dealt with it:
How long did it take for the fluid to reabsorb? Weeks? Months?
Will riding him make it worse? (My vet doesn’t think so, but what I’ve read says yes. So I’m confused.)
Any advice or words of wisdom?

My gelding got one several years ago, likely from a kick in the pasture. It looked like a softball under his skin!

My vet’s advice was also to give it time - he did not recommend trying to drain it.

It took weeks to go down and months to fully go away. He had a slightly raised area for close to a year that wasn’t easily seen but could be felt when grooming.

It never seemed to bother him and my vet said no riding restrictions as long as he was comfortable.
