Who is your Favorite Equestrian Artist?

Wesley Dennis and Sam Savitt

Anyone know who Sarah Averill is?
Where is she is located?
Her web site contact page is not working for me.
There is no direct information there, like an email or phone #:

She captures some wonderful expressions in her subjects.

Laurie Justus Pace - she is the most lovely person. I spent an hour on the phone with her one day.

And this particular Franz Marc is my next purchase for my office - if I have to look at it all day, by God, it’s going to be horses! LOL

I really love Wesley Dennis (who illustrated the Marguerite Henry books) that vintage style is connected to my earliest horse crazy memories- so it’s more than just artistic appreciation- there is something emotional there.

Clarence William Anderson (Billy and Blaze) has the same effect for me:

and then there is of course Rosa Bonheur

these are some of my favorites as well! i totally credit the illustrators of the horse books of my youth with my passion for (and eventual career in) the arts.

Lydia Kiernan. http://www.lydiakiernan.co.uk/

C. W. Anderson. His drawings of Thoroughbreds are the best. He just managed to capture their whole spirit and what makes them special.

Hey, that’s me! Thanks. Sorry the contact page isn’t working; I’ll check that out–my e-mail should be on there, or up at the “contact me” button in the upper right hand. In the meantime, feel free to PM me!

ETA: Just added e-mail information directly to the contact page, so hopefully even if the form doesn’t load, the rest of the info will be there. Thanks for letting me know there was an issue.

I love Xu Beihong’s “Galloping Horse”… my grandfather inexplicably bought a print of it when he was in WW2, overseas… he doesn’t like horses at all and it was before I was alive so there were no horse people in the family… but I ended up with the print and I love it. I like his other work too…

I also love Nancy Glazier’s work, horses and other animals, her use of light just fascinates me…

Also-my favorite photographer is Sarah K. Andrew, she’s captured photographs of anyone from my friends to feed lot horses that literally catch my breath sometimes. She has a magician’s touch on the camera and she sees her shot coming from a mile away.

What you know, I would not have thought the artist was right here.

Your PMs are full, need to clean the drawer a bit, please.

I am terrible about COTH messages–just cleared it out. Sorry, I’m really not trying to hide from people, I’m just a pack rat.

I have 3 Munnings too!

Two in the living room, and one in the bedroom. That one is of a girl, she was engaged to Munning’s brother. She is in a hammock with a small dog.
In 1999, I was able to go to London, and had one day free. I took a train with a debit card and a little cash. I made it to his home which is a nationally registered house. It was open for tours two days a week. Lucky me it was the right day. The house is now a museum, and they don’t take credit cards! Well, they didn’t then. I really fell for a couple of the paintings. The Arbour is one.
It was a glorious day. I got to prowl the grounds and see the black cat that lived there. [I was having serious cat withdrawals after being out of the country for 5 days.]

I have also always loved CW Anderson, Paul Brown, Wesley Dennis, and Sam Savitt.
And who did the stunning b&w pen and ink drawings for Walter Farley?

Frank Voss…only because I am blessed to own 3 of his paintings. One of my Grandfather. He painted the VA fox hunting crowd in the 30’s and 40’s. he really was a lovely painter.

Carol Grigg who paints mostly Southwest native American horses and figures (mostly women and children). I also collect native American equine-type art from other native artists from various tribes.

I have a good bit of Chinese and Japanese horse art and sculpture, although I’d have to dig out the receipts to name the artists.

George Stubbs

I really like Joan Larson who is a local artist. I have four of her prints. http://www.joanlarson.com/

I also like Kim Penner. Another Canadian artist
http://www.kimpenner.com/

That would be Munnings. Please, please check out his work if you are unfamiliar.

Great thread!
So many talented artists have been cited already, some whom I didn’t know, I love it.

I love this Munnings study
http://www.artrenewal.org/pages/artwork.php?artworkid=18990&size=large

and most horse paintings / studies by Géricault.

As a kid reading Walter Farley’s books, Raoul Auger’s illustrations started me onto drawing horses

I have a print by Marine Oussedik, so I’ll add her to this thread

So many favorites!

Where does one start with a favorite? Munnings, Savitt, Stubs, George Ford Morris, to name some from the past. Current artists I love are Michelle Grant, Tony O’Connor, Carol Andreen-Harris…I could go on! I’d mention Jeanne Newton Schoborg, but I’d be name dropping myself! I’m not quite as good as the artists I listed…they are my heroes and I keep telling myself someday I will be as good as them!

Have the COTH gremlins eaten my reply? Say it ain’t so!

The gist of my post was: I am tragically uneducated when it comes to art, but I do love it. Having heard of none of the people mentioned here, I wanted to plug our own DLee. She does beautiful work, and one day when I am rich and famous I will have her paint some of our animals.
