Who is your Favorite Equestrian Artist?

I really like

Fred Stone
Sharon Lynn Campbell
Steve Filarsky

Of course also a Thelwell fan and George Stubbs (classic art)

I would love to hear and see links to your favs.

I really love Wesley Dennis (who illustrated the Marguerite Henry books) that vintage style is connected to my earliest horse crazy memories- so it’s more than just artistic appreciation- there is something emotional there.

Clarence William Anderson (Billy and Blaze) has the same effect for me:

and then there is of course Rosa Bonheur

Without a doubt, Gina Hawkshaw. She did the most amazing painting of my late little grey horse, capturing every single detail that made him the fabulous little horse that he was. Here’s a picture of the painting. Gina is on Facebook, and her website is www.sportingart.co

I have 2 copies of The Horse Fair by Bonheur. One is full color and the other one is sepia. I prefer the sepia toned one.

CW Anderson’s still my absolute fave, for the nostalgic reasons Plainandtall mentions… love Wesley Dennis too, but Anderson’s drawings are just so crisp and detailed… he’s totally my hero with graphite and pastel.

And Thelwell always makes me happy.

Sally Lancaster is a realistic portrait artist, her polo and dressage pieces are particularly awesome.

Alicia Barry Underhill has some really neat work. I can’t seem to find her link though.

Kimberly santini mostly does dogs and cats but her horses and cows are delightful.

Jennifer Pratt is the first artist I’ve purchased an original from. It’s a foal painting and I just love her use of light.

I may have heard of some of these from coth boards, actually. I could have these artists’ works hanging in every room of my house if my budget and non horsey MrB would allow!

Lionel Edwards, John KinG, Stubbins.

Paul Brown, Leonardo da Vinci

My new favorite painter

Wesley Dennis!

I weep for the children who grew up with different images of Misty in their heads, or who read Album of Horses with cheap black and white copies.

Paul Brown

Sam Savitt

“Snaffles” (Charlie Johnson Payne)

I really like some of the work I’ve seen by Judith Berkshire Jones. I also like the illustrations in Ben Green’s books but I’d have to look up the artist.

I have always loved the work of Judith Kent Pyrah after seeing her original work in a near by art gallery in the mid eighties. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase one of her numbered signed prints a few years later.

SmallChange - what a wonderful portrait of your horse, the personality shines through as well as the artist’s technical talent. It must bring a smile to your face whenever you see it.

We have a similar portrait of my husband’s late QH mare done by Joan McEntire of Tryon, who has won some awards at Keeneland; she’s also very good!

Horse art! One of my fav. subjects–been collecting since I was a kid; prints only, though.
Sir Alfred J. Munnings!! I’m obsessed with his work, judging by the 3 prints hanging on my living room walls.
CW Anderson–found 3 sets of his prints in my parents’ stuff as a kid–have some of them on my walls.
Christine Picavet–my fav. is “Keeneland.”
Jocelyn Sandor’s done some neat stuff. I wish she still produced her cartoon calendars. I looked forward to those every year. At least she still sells her Christmas cards…

Sarah Lynn Richards

Jeanne Schoborg.

I can’t remember her name - could be posted already. The artist who does line drawings with watercolor washes, so they are half realism, half expressive.

CW Anderson

And years ago, a good friend did a pencil sketch/head study of my horse from back then - really reminds me of his work. Lost the friend as we went our separate ways, and I’ve always wondered if her artistic talent took her far. It should have…

Also loved Sam Savitt.

Loved Jennees Cortez’s Saratoga works, before the legal tangle between her and NYRA.

I have an Ole Larsen lithograph that I just love, so I’ll add his name to the list
