Who makes the best tail extensions?

I definitely don’t like the super short banged tails. They look like rat tails.

I don’t think the loop top is wrong. Looks great on our guy.

Regarding the rat tails - Turn out is all about fashion these days, and fashion comes down to personal preference. Right now the dominate fashion / preference is super thick tails, more than most horses can grow naturally, so now we are adding artificial tails.

I LOVE the look of a “pulled and banged” tail, and do not think they look like rat tails at all - plus, they are TRADITIONAL, its what a HUNTER would sport, as its practical.

This is how Fox Hunters are usually turned out.

But as we know, American show hunters have very little to do with Fox Hunters, and American turn out and “tradition” is tied more to current fashions - then any actual fox hunting traditions.

Can a fake tail ever be used on a jumper? Or does the tail have to be braided?[/QUOTE]

Neither mane nor tail needs to be braided in jumpers  So you could use one, and while I sometimes see braided manes in Grand Prix level (or some classics), braided tails are rare).

Midge - Why do you say the loop is the wrong top? That’s what all of my tails have, and braid in beautifully, swing naturally, and you honestly can’t even tell they have a fake on.

(photo shared before, but best one I’ve got of the tail)

If it works for you, great. But, as I have said before, I’ve put in thousands of fake tails and more often than not, that type of tail is too short. I know a lot of people who will say they are happy with their tail, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is too short.

Just last weekend, I had a friend cover my work and she mentioned to someone that the tail is too short and how did they want her to handle it? They asked her if I paid her to say that.

Now, why would I say it if it wasn’t true?

  1. I don’t make any money on the fake tails, no matter where you get them.

  2. I take pride in my work. I want it to look good!

I’m asking you because you’re the expert! But…why would a topper make a tail too short? (I’m asking this with all sincerity.) I ordered the length of the tail I wanted, and that’s the length I got.

It’s not the topper, per se, it is the construction. A lot of the hair is inside the tail, inside the braid that holds the tail together. The hair is only going to be so long and if you use up some of that length to double back on the tail, you are not using it for length.

On of the suggested companies above says their tails are 31 inches long. Way too short in most cases.

But, if yours works for you, I certainly wouldn’t get a different one based on my say so!

Thanks very much everyone for the responses. As always, so very helpful to post questions on this forum.
