Interested in knowing what tails people are using on the A circuit.
Thanks
I’ve always just gotten tails from my braider, thats how most people I know do it.
Remember back in the day when no one had a tail extension?

I really wish they’d go away. I’m sure there are some horses that could use one, but I’m so sick of seeing to big/too long tails. So distracting when the tail is stuck between the horses legs as it moves.
Sorry to get off topic!
Comingback: I so agree. It looks so silly when that happens. I hate it when they put fake tails in horses who have decent tails.
That being said, some of them do need them. I am sure anyone with an Appaloosa will agree

Both of our tails are Champion. They have a loop at the top and are very natural looking. Stay away from the cheaper Trophy tail brand unless you have a pony. They are too short and thin and the black one I tried just bled smelly dye when washed. I bought one of our champion tails new and one used. They’ve held up really well. They do come in different weights and lengths. I would definitely ask your braider or a hunter jumper tack shop what style you should get.
And they look beautiful. Haters gonna hate. Go get you a tail!
Get a fake tail with a flat top, not an inside out braid. Don’t get one that is banged. Measure your horses tail from about four inches above the bottom of his tail bone to his fetlock. That is how long your tail should be.
There are several braiders that make tails and are good at matching colors. If you do not have a regular braider to ask, PM me and I will give you some numbers.
I will try to post some pictures later. I have been meaning to do this.
All three of mine came from customtails.com
The loop top is the correct one for Hunters, I chose the 1/2 lb tapered as I didn’t want anything too crazy big. Looks very nice and natural.

Remember back in the day when people only responded to the actual question asked and didn’t pontificate? Oh wait that’s never.
I have two from the Tail Source, www.tailsource.com, very easy to work with, very fast shipping and you can exchange as many times as you need to for the right match.
My other is from the Show Pen, www.theshowpen.com, also great service and tremendous quality!
My tails are natural loop, one is blunt and two are tapered. I like the look of the tapered better but the blunt isn’t offensive. I have 1lb tails, I like a fuller look, but they do look fake - 1/2lb tails look more natural.
I have a beautiful subtle 1/2 pound dark bay one from customtails.com… that I need to see if they will take back because I never used it before horsey decided he wanted to be a jumper! Really good customer service through the ordering process, competitive price and fast delivery.
Can a fake tail ever be used on a jumper? Or does the tail have to be braided?
Jumpers can have their manes braided in jumper braids, but they don’t get their tails braided. I’ve never seen one with a braided tail, even in Olympic showjumping. Jumper mane braids are cool though. There are lots of fun styles.
Tails don’t have to be braided to put a fake in, but I can’t think of a reason to put one on a jumper since it’s a vanity only accessory.

Midge - Why do you say the loop is the wrong top? That’s what all of my tails have, and braid in beautifully, swing naturally, and you honestly can’t even tell they have a fake on.
(photo shared before, but best one I’ve got of the tail)
A couple of our horses have “busy” tails, so we’ve gotten weighted tails from Barb at Custom Tails.

I have reasonable size tails with both types of tops shown. Both work very well but I prefer the natural loop one labeled “wrong” (if loving you is wrong, I don’t wanna be right )
As an aside - the knob top is a non starter for me.

I have appaloosas - and I don’t like fake tails at all, especially on an appaloosa.
I know its the current fashion, but I don’t like these huge, LONG, heavy - and often fake tails.
I like the “sportier” look of a shorter tail - like what the British show hunters. Its much easier for a tail to appear thick, when its banged short.
I prefer a British show hunter turn out - Over an American Show Hunter turn out.
And lord knows I rather brush out this, after a day of hunting through mud and bushes - Over any of these over the top tails (notice the hair catching between the legs of the walking)
