Many of us in the Renewing our Musical Share thread are noticing that when we post a link to a YouTube video, the link shows but there is no longer a thumbnail. I think it is happening in other threads, also. Some people are getting thumbnails, some are not. Is this a glitch in the system?
It does depend on how the link is added.
If it’s in line with text, it will not show a thumbnail.
If it’s on its own line, it usually does.
Can you link to the thread?
Okay I’m going to go try that with one of my posts as an experiment.
Here’s the thread for reference: https://forum.chronofhorse.com/t/renewing-our-musical-share-thread/767350/1070
Tried w/my post to put the link on its own line and also align it differently from the rest of the text and nope.
Awesome, thank you. I can see what you’re talking about–some of those definitely should pop with the preview.
I’ve noticed that link previews are kind of hit & miss. Even when I link several things all in one post in the same way, some will preview & some won’t.
I don’t know if it’s server load or link type or something actually at the link that’s blocking the preview for whatever reason (or just gremlins in the software coth uses here )
To stop link preview you can include the link on a line with other text, or put three spaces ahead of the link on it’s own line. Totally understand you’re looking for a way to force preview, and I haven’t come across a way to do that. But if it’s any consolation, link preview has always been kind of finicky and inconsistent.
I’m sure @Moderator_1 will be along shortly with some ideas!
I’ve been doing some research and it appears that YouTube may put limits on embedded video links to a given site. Other relatively small sites like ours were having similar issues. I’ll see if anyone came up with a solution!
The link generated when I clicked “share” then “copy link” worked. It does not have /watch in the link.
The one above that did not embed, I got from clicking “share” then expanded the options of where to share it, then clicked the option to copy the link at the top of the options that appear there.
Take out the extra dots. Below is what the successful link looked like.
That’s interesting. I have, on all sites, simply copied the URL and pasted it. I’ll play around with this way.
I’ll give it a try, too.
Update: Yup, that works! Go to the “share” icon for YouTube, then copy the link through that instead of just copying it from the URL.
Finally got it to work doing it that way. Now, all I have to do is remember how.
