Why do horses withdraw after XC?

Never watched XC much before;
what are the rules or criteria that a rider- horse must pass or be withdrawn ?

just wondering too, how Ingrid Klimke’s horse went great around the course but didn’t make it to Showjumping phase?
Commentators didn’t say a thing !

The horse must pass a vet inspection and jog sound before being allowed to do the third phase, so some horses will not pass and other horses will not even be presented after having run the xc course the day before.

Klimke’s horse is known for being great XC and then knocking down rails in SJ. There are different skills required for each of the 3 phases of Eventing, which is what makes it such a great sport. Entirely possible that a horse that excels in show jumping will not have what it takes to successfully navigate out on a big xc course, and vice versa.

Klimke’s horse DID make it to the SJ phase. She jumped in the first round (team round) and had 9 faults, which put her out of individual medal contention. I imagine Ingrid felt there was little point in subjecting him to the 2nd round of SJ, given his history of having rails and with little to jump for but pride. He already did the business.

Right. I think the OP didn’t see her in the Individual Finals, which ran after the Team finals in SJ.

Only 2 riders from each country go on to the Individual Finals, and Germany had 2 riders already (Michael Jung and Sandra Auffarth), who then ended up taking Gold & Bronze in the Eventing Individual final.

It’s 3 riders from each country. Ingrid qualified for the final 25, she could have jumped, but instead she withdrew.
What I don’t understand is why when Ingrid pulled out, that Dirk Shrade didn’t take her place, he was in the top 25 too, he was 10th place overall, but because of the silly 3-rider ruler was going to miss out. He missed out anyway, even with Ingrid pulling out.

Her horse did show jump…he showjumped for the team placings. She just didn’t comeback for the individuals.

Her horse is not the best show jump horse. She pulled out a great round for him the first round keeping it only 2 rails. But since she was out of medal contention…and not likely to jump a clear round. She WD from the individual competition.

Thanks. I stand corrected.

As for Dirk, maybe there’s a no substitution rule for the Finals?

XC is grueling and some of the horses are too tired or too sore to do SJ.

I feel really bad for Boyd. Just bad luck. And what a gorgeous horse!

It is not unusual for horses to receive minor injuries on XC. Scratches, scrapes, bruises and pulls. Some can be foot sore. Some horses will pass the final vet check and jump stadium without risking further injury. Others may pass final check and jump for team placings then be withdrawn. Others are presented and are held for review, as in Boyd & Otis. In this case Boyd withdrew instead of representing, some are accepted on the 2nd check and some are spun (eliminated). For the record there is no recourse to the vet check decision.

My guess is the rules do not allow for subsitution between the two SJ rounds. The eligible 25 are set after the 1st round and that is it.
