Why Do Our Pets Try to kill themselves

My long haired domestic, who is actually heavier than my Maine Coon, puked this morning. Luckily, I beat the dog to it.

This was at least 2’ long. We recently had carpet replaced. I’m guessing this was on an edge somewhere I missed.

So scary. Huge vet bill or dead cat avoided. And secondary ingestion by the dog. Yuck.image

Glad your two fuzzbutts are ok!

Our most recent rescue tried to kill herself by crawling up under a client’s car and going for a drive. We thought she was gone, but 23 days later she was found howling a mile up the road, with mostly healed bite marks on her head. Unfortunately she obviously hadn’t been eating well while lost, and was in organ failure…$4000 + later, and she is mostly done her medications and I no longer have to get up at 4am to feed and medicate her. She gets blood work done on Monday, and hopefully her E-tube (feeding tube) out tuesday or Wednesday.

She WAS a barn cat, but we had to move her into the house for care…our house cats are not sure about the tiny kitty with the tube out the back of her neck!

I think it is because they think it entertains us. Either that or they know your bank balance. Because mine are never sick when I am flush. Or no. Always when I have 0.

Bonnie died (I believe) because of her constant pica for string and carpet edges. Baler has decided that he likes to nosh on carpet edges and string, too. And - of course - the more I scold him when I catch him at it, the little idiot, the more he does it. 'Tard.

@CHT - :astonished: :astonished: eeek You are very kind. But still…eek

Woke up about two weeks ago to a very strange “wet” sound and discovered my cat, “Kitten”, had a used dryer sheet hanging out of his mouth and was noshing on it. I leapt out of bed, and of course he ran. I caught up with him and pulled a strip of dryer sheet from his mouth. It was about 1/3 of a sheet, lengthwise.

Call to vet led to call to animal poison control led to emergency vet visit. Because it was used and because I use “free and gentle” sheets, they weren’t worried about toxins, but they were worried about obstruction. They tried to induce vomiting to no avail. Was told to watch for signs of obstruction for 7 days.

Last Friday, his appetite waned. Saturday, I awoke to an epic puke. I was about to throw him in a carrier and head off to the emergency vet for surgery when I randomly decided to dissect the puke. Lo and behold, it contained precisely 2/3 of a used dryer sheet. Easter miracle. I cried tears of joy.

Cats…

Oh man. Thank god most animals can vomit.

And I beat my GSD to it before he had secondary ingestion.

You vomited before he did?

LOL…he was diving for it.

Takes more than cat puke to set me off. A guy hacking snot does it. I’m gagging typing this

Glad you were quick on the mark!

I was extremely fortunate that my cat never had an obstruction. That girl ate so much tissue paper 🤦. All it took was a moment of carelessness on your part and she had found it and was chomping away. She ate a number of cardboard stuffed mouse toys before I figured out where they were disappearing to (her stomach, that’s where). She also once ate an entire large feather toy, which she thankfully threw back up.

This is the little imp before disappearing. She is a client favourite. The number of clients who broke down crying when they heard she was lost was shocking to me: we have only had her since December 22, but she has this way of looking at you like you are the most important thing in her world and I guess a lot of my clients need that in their day. Meanwhile my house cats are eager for her to go back to being a barn cat.

Not a cat but a dog…my greyhound tried to kill himself many times since we adopted him. First time after a couple of weeks we got him, he ran full speed in a closed gate chasing a stray cat…severe head trauma, teared muscle, many many stitches, a couple of days in vet clinic and about 600 euros
Then after some years he stumbled while playing with our new puppy and landed on a small wall’s corner. With his throat. We rushed to the clinic and arrived just in time. He broke his hyoid bone on both sides and had a major internal bleeding. 1000 euros and three weeks of constant assistance.
After a couple of years he had a stroke, he was completely paralized. We brought him to a specialized clinic about 200 km far, about 2k euros plus physioterapy but after a couple of months he was completely back on his legs.
Last year he had a mysterious pneumonia (I believe he took covid from me, I had Just recovered. Even if the vets says it’s impossible) and that was again a close call, he’s quite old now and it took him almost one year to recover completely. Another 500 euros more or less.
I always joke about how his previous owner in Ireland earned about 12k euros during his racing career (that’s what was written in his scores), I have almost spent the same amount in vets and medicines…lol
