Why do reining horses wear standing wraps to warm up?

It’s the only discipline I’ve ever seen warm up in standing wraps up over their knees and some kind of tape on it. I’m just curious why it works and how it started.

The standing wraps over the knees are for horses that hit themselves in their spins. It most likely has electrical tape on it.

Knee protection is used for horses that interfere when spinning and generally is used on one leg only, although some may protect both legs:

Not sure why those are standing wraps?
Must be what the trainer thought worked best for that horse.

I have seen an influx it seems of western pleasure horses in the warm up, wearing standing wraps and either no-bows or quilts, (I have never gotten close enough to look). Would there be a reason? maybe so you don’t have to remove the wraps, put on polos or boots, then re-wrap when done?

For the WP horses, working them in standing bandages may also do more to tighten their legs (get rid of the appearance of wind puffs). Polos and boots can leave funny little lines on the legs: more to that bandages. In WP were a lot is about the “look” this might matter.

I don’t understand a lot of things western pleasure people do.

Dressage also has warm ups and even schooling in standing wraps…

But we call them “exercise bandages”

These are the most commonly used:

I have a horse that irritates his splint bones by hitting them if the boots are too soft and thin or irritates them by the boots being too hard and stiff. The eskadron wraps with polo’s have been the perfect solution for him.

I’ve never seen that. Just polo wraps.
