Why does every part of my horse's body shine except his neck?

Who has the answer?

His neck gets treated just as well as the rest of his body…

VT, I keep telling you, you’re just not using enough shellaq (sp?)

I mean, we talked about this already–if shellaq is good enough for Delta Burke and her dinner roll collection, it’s good enough for you and Damien.

Is he under a fly sheet or day sheet? Is he out in turned out during the day. He could just be sun bleached enough on his neck. Bud looks duller on his neck, and this is why.

Also if you haven’t already, try rubbing him down with a terry towel when you are through grooming. It seems to help bring out the natural oils in their coat.

“The older I get, the better I used to be.”

He’s in from 7AM til 9PM…it’s starting to look a bit better…this is so weird!

With all the petting and praising of his perfect lines?

Do you use rubber reins?

Does he sweat on his neck when he is turned out? The salt in the sweat really bleaches their coats when it dries (same for the flank area).

Saddle soap and oil residue from the reins probably. If he was white you’d see the discolored patches too.

DMK - he’s not much of a sweater ? When his coat came in this spring after being comando all winter, his neck was as shiney as could be…but now it’s a very dull brown. I curry and curry, rub and rub, brush and brush, cuss and cuss…but nothing’s happening. Even my Gold Nugget Hair Polish that I swear by is failing me…yet I can see my face in his butt!

ETBW - hehehe

Findeight - would make sense, except this is ALL over his neck - jugular included.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have a horse who doesn’t sweat normally and his neck hair is less shiney and thinner than the rest of his body…maybe it has to do with not sweating well?

You might be right. I mean he sweats - not tons…but he definitely sweats…but the fact the he sweats more on his barrel and butt and not on his neck may be a factor…hmmmm…I did the skin pinch test yesterday and I know he’s not dehydrated
