If there wasn’t exorbitant money to be made - you think that wouldn’t solve many of those problems? Genuinely curious how you see the money disconnected from the issues I’ve highlighted.
I didn’t realize I was lit up?
NO!
If there was not money (exorbitant or just lots) to be made then there would be no horse industry at all.
Period.
Do you think maybe that’s why people constantly argue that this isn’t a “real sport”? Playing devils advocate here. Because yes there’s money to be made in sports - but IF that’s all there was, we wouldn’t have sports.
Olympians don’t make money off going to the Olympics - only ancillary activities.
What I’m seeing right now is horses that multi-horse owners, usually with their own horse property, may have “carried” for years – like horses the kids have outgrown, mares that have breeding issues, school horses who “aren’t quite right” being school horses etc. – being offered at pre-pandemic prices. I suspect this has to do with the price of hay. “Carrying” an extra horse when hay is $7/bale is way different than carrying that horse when hay is $15/bale,
Unfortunately I am also seeing old, NQR horses offered for sale, when realistically the most kind thing to do would be to put them down. I mean, that always happens but I’m seeing it more.
This is looking at my breed of interest (Morgans), and also local (Massachusetts) FB groups.
This is a really good breakout, thank you for sharing. My guy will also never be up for sale, but I am afraid to add up everything the last 3 years I have put into him…it won’t touch yours but I don’t think I want to see that number
There isn’t any exorbitant money to be made in horses.
And if someone happens to make a good lick on a horse sale then super for them.
Welcome to COTH!
We love train wrecks!
Any takers on betting on house guests?
Right!
I have a homebred horse that is never for sale and I’m not interested in tallying up my costs to produce him to carefully. Good news is that with the current market if I did have to sell him, I might recoup my investment. Or at least the majority
I never add up what my horse cost me in a year. I want to enjoy my horse, not know how poor I am because of it.
We need more people like you in this sport.
The other day in another thread someone accused someone else of being a “sea lion,” which I had to look up because I had never heard of it before.
It’s getting too fishy in here for me. I’m going to take my Jack’s Salsa (best salsa ever) and chips over and join the spectators.
This went to “Don’t Feed the Troll” vibes very quickly.
Hummus is sounding good today
Nope. It’s illogical.
People who buy low and sell high are doing what every single investor in every single market is doing.
There’s nothing to complain about. Don’t like it? Go buy direct from the track or Europe yourself. Good luck with that.
Laugh…right…it is all because you know everything and we know nothing or better yet, we know everything but are hiding the truth.
I don’t like scammers. I don’t like liars.
I have no problem with good horse people buying low and selling high.
Buying low and selling high does not equal scammer or liar to me.
Now, there are scammers and liars that do buy low and sell high. But that does not make a good person who buys low and sells high automatically a bad person for doing it.
What? No! I just got started on my wine here and you’re running away already?
Bummer. Back to coffee and work I guess.
Jesus christ on a cracker. Are people this dumb, or what was this??
Guess anyone who decided to sell their home in this market are just crooks looking for dirty money.
Go buy them untrained/green and cheap, OP. Then train them. Then sell them cheap, like you say they’re worth. Lead with your feet, not your mouth.
No, they’re just pointing out how asinine your suggestions are.
Which they are.
If you’ve got a problem with how everyone does it, chances are the problem ain’t them… it’s you, hunny.
ETA: aaaand now the comment that I responded to is dirty deleted! Is that kind of like dirty money, or…
Woooo boy, lots of allegations here! Put up or shut up.
