Why is our old man peeing on.....everything?

Our male ACD has started marking strange things in his old age. He’s neutered, has always been an alpha/dominant type. We aren’t sure of his exact age, but DH got him as a full grown adult 9 years ago.

Obviously dogs pee on things, it’s a part of life. But I have started noticing that he’s peeing on random stuff that I would really rather him NOT mark, thankyouverymuch. Things like our folding camp chairs, the glider/swing thing on our side porch, the deep freezer on our back porch, grocery bags that were set down for 2 seconds so I could open the door. WHAT on earth is going through this guy’s head? I understand that with older age dogs (and humans) have less bladder control, but I have never seen him have an “accident”. This seems very, uh…determined “point and shoot” behavior. I just can’t figure out why he would start doing this. #1, I obviously don’t want my things peed on, but #2 I don’t want my freezer to rust, the porch floor to get nasty, stuff to get ruined. Help!

ETA: We did recently move, but he started this behavior at our old house; he’d pee on random (not new!) things on our porch.

Could he possibly have a bladder infection?

Dogs also occasionally develop dementia in their old age.

Bladder infection…I’m no vet but I don’t think so? He doesn’t seem in pain when urinating (and he is a BABY, he’d let you know!), I haven’t noticed an odor or funny texture. Are there other symptoms I should be checking for?

UTI–usually will have frequent urination. Some dogs may have little accidents in the house. Wants to pee a lot. You may find blood in the urine, although that isn’t required.

I’ve never had one cry or anything to indicate pain, even though I’m sure it hurt. I’ve had several dogs have a bladder infection at one point or another.

I have an old cat with kidneys that aren’t failing yet, but they aren’t working great. He drinks a TON of water and goes through a full box of litter a week. Kidney function could be an issue.

Or your dog is just having a good time p*ssing everywhere.

My old neutered male will even pee on the house if the mood strikes him. He loves to mark stuff. My grill. My step. You name it. Tires are a personal favorite.

Increased urination can also be signs of Cushings or Diabetes. usually both will be because of increased water intake. Cushings often causes ravenous appetite as well.

Vet exam. My AHT will Pee in his crate if he has a UTI.

Sigh. The pups are coming up an being due for shots anyway. Looks like we’ll be headed to the vet :frowning: Fingers crossed please.

My elderly JRT did this for the last year and a half of his life (he was approximately 15 or 16 when he passed). He had some dementia, and we basically think he got to the point of being like “I am old as eff and this is my house so I’m gonna do whatever i want!” He was pretty well house tarined up until that point.
He was checked over by the vet hundreds of times. It was strictly behavioral. A belly band very quickly made the issue easier to deal with…he still lifted his leg on whatever he felt like, but didn’t bother me much since i didnt have to clean carpets anymore.
Since he was so old, i didn’t want to give him a hard time.
