Will a ground driven manure spreader do this

Hi All,

For those of you who own manure spreaders, will a ground driven spreader/ shredder, similar to the smaller cubic foot ABI compact spreaders, effectively spread lawn grass clippings? I have never owned a manure spreader but I’m wondering if it could serve double duty for stall cleaning and spreading grass clippings on my perimeter trail.

I’m not sure how sturdy the gears and chain on the smaller spreaders are. I’ve got a JD 1108G and it would do grass clippings easily.

If the smaller one can handle heavy urine-soaked straw bedding with manure, grass clippings shouldn’t be a problem. If it’s only designed for fluffy shavings the grass clippings might jam it up if they’re packed and wet.

I’d at least layer the clippings in with manure.

I have a 25 bushel ground drive spreader and it would easily handle grass clippings.

Hej what is a JD 1108G?

I have a newer spreader. the smallest one. the only time i have trouble is when there is lots of hay mixed with the shavings/manure. a few quick turns and fast driving takes care of it. So I’d say, no trouble with grass clippings.

It’s John Deere’s largest ground drive manure spreader. Model 1108G (Their larger ones are all PTO drive) Sorry for the jargon :concern:.

My Newer spreader wouldn’t have any issue with grass clippings. But I’d spread them within a day or two-- like any organic material, when moist grass clippings are compressed into a pile, it will begin to ferment & heat up. I think fire risk is low, but still something to be aware of.

Thanks for the responses everyone. HH, that’s very interesting to know a newer spreader might work for me as well. I like the ease and size of those spreaders but thought I should stick with a more traditional type. I always spread my clippings immediately since they get hot and slimy fast without enough browns to mix in so perhaps that gives me more options. It looks like I have some brand research to do…
