WILL/SHOULD THE HORSE WORLD BECOME POLITICALLY CORRECT?

Sheesh. I’m a native Texan, and I knew that.

First about that story…

ROTFLMAO!!!

I can just see all those Mujahaddin soldiers watching that crazy American going flying down the side of a mountain!!!

I remember one of 595’s members saying that the food improved considerably after they “proved themselves” with the pinpoint strikes. I’m thinking the food improved after the Afghanis were impressed with that Snowy Mountain manuever.

Stephanie, as for Frontline and the website, may I take a moment to just express my total admiration? Frontline has always been the most intelligent show on TV (A Simple Crime, After Enron and the program on the sad and sorry state of the Israeli-Palestine peace process stick out in my mind as particularly exceptional). But I must also add that the website is truly wonderful (and I’m not just sucking up either - I said as much during one of our many 9/11 conversations last year).

and yd? You just STOP your bad self!

Sannois, maybe I should let Hobson speak for herself, but I didn’t get the impression she was offended…mearly shocked.

I love that quote and I’m pretty darn liberal.

Just a disclaimer…being liberal doesn’t mean one doesn’t believe in personal responsibility.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’- A Cowboy’s Guide to Life

Well, I wasn’t flaming all disabled people. Just rude ones. Rudeness just isn’t called for. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to put up with people who think they’re entitled just because… you fill in the blank.

Life isn’t fair. It isn’t fair that I’m not tall, skinny and rich - and forever 30, while we’re at it. But that doesn’t give me license to run all over people.

that this is acceptable? What about the damage to their self image if a mere woman puts them in their place? If it is a white woman who does it, isn’t that racism?

Velvet, I agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment. I suppose the point of departure between us is how best to address the underlying issues of social welfare and inequity in our world.

OMG, that is so funny!!!

If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody ELSE’s dog around- A Cowboy’s Guide to Life

This thread has become so long, I haven’t had time to follow the whole thing, so forgive me if I am being redundant.

There is no such thing as politically correct, IMO. Things are either correct or they are incorrect. It is like being pregnant, you are or you aren’t. The term politically correct, means that you are taking something something that is basically incorrect and using the circumstances to justify doing it. I think that is a slippery slope, things are right or wrong.

For example, it is wrong to beat someone to death. Is it more wrong because of their sexual orientation? Is the victim of this crime more dead? It is wrong for the police to pull someone over for no reason, if they are white or black. It is wrong to label a whole group of people based on the actions of a few (even if they are republicans).

I have been a liberal, and proud of it, for most of my life. But lately I am have become discouraged by what I see going on politically. It seems like a big brawl where different groups hord rights and resources in the name of political correctness and there is precious little personal responsibility. We all have or will go through tough times, SO WHAT! That is part of what life is about. It really bothers me to see people take on victimhood as a major personality trait. That is why I seperated myself from the woman’s movement. To be angry about being oppressed, you have to be oppressed. I didn’t want to be oppressed anymore.

Anyway, these days when someone talks about PC, I round up the kids and check for my wallet.

Yup, Jeannette, that’s what I said.

I’m curious - what exactly do you think this condemned PC zeitgeist (love that word, have been saving it up to use on this BB for some time) has cost you?

To ensure that we Americans never offend anyone, airport screeners will
not be allowed to profile people. They will continue random searches of
everyone: 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper
identification, Secret Service agents who are members of the President’s
security detail, 85-year old congressmen with metal hips and Medal of
Honor winning former Governors. But they will not single out any one group
of individuals for searches. Let’s pause a moment and take the following
test.

In 1972 at the Munich Olympics, athletes were kidnapped and massacred by:
a. Olga Corbett
b. Sitting Bull
c. Arnold Schwarzenegger
d. Muslim males mostly between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1979, the U.S. embassy in Iran was taken over by:
a. Lost Norwegians
b. Elvis
c. A tour bus full of 80-year-old women
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

During the 1980’s a number of Americans were kidnapped in Lebanon by:
a. John Dillinger
b. The King of Sweden
c. The Boy Scouts
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1983, the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up by:

In 1985 the cruise ship Achille Lauro was hijacked and a 70 year old
American passenger was murdered in his wheelchair and thrown overboard
by:
a. The Smurfs
b. Davy Jones
c. The Little Mermaid
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40.

In 1985 TWA flight 847 was hijacked at Athens, and a U.S. Navy diver was
murdered (and his body tossed to the tarmac) by:
a. Captain Kid
b. Charles Lindberg
c. Mother Teresa
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up in flight via a bomb planted by:
a. Scooby Doo
b. The Tooth Fairy
c. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid who had a few sticks of
dynamite left over from the train job
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1993 the World Trade Center was bombed by:
a. Richard Simmons
b. Grandma Moses
c. Michael Jordan
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1996, nineteen American servicemen died when Khobar Towers was bombed
by:

c. American grandmothers
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 1998, the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by:

d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 2002 the United States fought a war in Afghanistan against:
a. Enron
b. The NFL
c. The Catholic Church
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

In 2002 reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and murdered by:
a. Bonny and Clyde
b. Captain Kangaroo
c. Billy Graham
d. Muslim males (mostly) between the ages of 17 and 40

As this test has shown, there are absolutely no patterns anywhere
to justify racial profiling. My confidence in our system is now totally
restored and I shall endure the persecutions (oops, I mean “random
searches”) gladly. After all, I must be safer now: the Feds say so!

Thanks TINO!!!

“I ain’t got a dime but what I got is mine; I ain’t rich, but Lord, I’m free.”

you better put down that frying pan or show me where I was ugly or disrepectful aka Sannois!
Or do you think I need a whomping just on general principal (which may well be true)?

that those of you who believe that poverty=laziness should read. I cannot for the life of me remmeber the name but it is by a woman journalist who goes to many towns across the US, gets a minimum wage job and tries to survive. She finds that basically, she cannot. AND she gave herself a car and starter money, which most single women with no decent education wouldn’t have.

Many working students/grooms that you know and see every day are stuck in the same poverty cycle.

Don’t be so quick to assume that hard work = success, even in the US (although the social and economic atmosphere here do level the playing fields considerably compared to many other countries). If that was true one of our local barn owners would be Rodrigo Pessoa’s arch-rival. She works harder than anyone I’ve met. As it is she has never shown at an A show in any division over 3’9" and lives basically hand to mouth. She lacks money, luck (of birth and geography) and I suppose to some extent, skill/talent.

Luck, talent and capital resources are as important as hard work almost any day in this world.

I don’t have a lot of money and, frankly, I wish that horse sports were MORE competitive but I don’t begrudge my tax dollars supporting others. Comparing a bunch of middle class parents who don’t want their kids traumatized by losing an unimportant class to welfare and poverty sounds like comparing apples and oranges.

Democracy fails–always. It may take a while, but it always fails (or at least has been proven to fail throughout the world’s history to this point in time). So, give it another couple hundred years (max) and it’ll all fail and this conversation will be moot. No one will have any civil liberties here in the good ol’ USA and the term PC will be replaced with laws enforcing the use of specific terminology and harsh punishment for offenders.

I’ve been a fan of hers for some time, and her work inspired Mr Hobson and me to make our own local contribution to fairness; we’re paying the first rent and security deposit on an apartment for women transitioning out of one of the city’s domestic violence shelters. That’s one of the greatest obstacles to economic independence, so we thought this would be a big help to someone who is trying to rebuild her life. We will do this as often as we can afford. We finally make enough ourselves to comfortably afford horses and bikes and the occasional vacation, so it’s time to share and get rid of the money we don’t need.

I’m saying this so that some of you out there will get the HINT and make this kind of local connection yourselves and do the same. Don’t just wave your flag around on Wednesday–this is one idea for those of you who say you’d like to see a more just society. Those who can’t stomach the idea of missing a couple of horse shows so that someone else can get into housing, just ignore this post!
