WILL/SHOULD THE HORSE WORLD BECOME POLITICALLY CORRECT?

You wouldn’t leave the game just because the chubby kids have control of the dodgeball, would you?

pt, my quote above reflects business as usual and as popularly accepted here. That stuff is not classified as abuse–it’s the way capitalism works in the US. Sorry if you think I somehow twisted your words, but you’ve gone on record as being pro-capitalism. Perhaps you could be more clear about what it means to be anti-people welfare and to support the American industrial capitalist enterprise?

talking about??? Hobson is offended that I agree with her on the Patriot act, or you are all offended by my signature? Man I am getting old!!! I never thought anyone with liberal tendancies would like it. I found it last Sept after the attacks, when they were talking about all the security measures they wanted to enforce, and disrupt out personal freedoms, and I really loved it. Now Can Hobson or someone please explain what she was talking about?? Who is she a collective with??

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety” Benjamin Franklin, 1755
Founding member of The Fossils over Fences Clique!

The famous author of “Slaughterhouse Five” also wrote a short story (title escapes me) that later was made into a television program broadcast on PBS (this was back in the 60’s or 70’s). The story foresaw the rise of “political correctness” long before that term actually was coined.

The premise of the story is that in the future, we will live under a government that is the ultimate in “politically correct.” To that end, in the name of equality for all, the government will have draconian laws designed to level the playing field for all. For example, the strong must carry around heavy sandbags so they do not have an advantage over the weak, the beautiful must wear masks so that they have no advantage over the less attractive, the graceful must wear heavy shoes with uneven soles, those with good eyesight must wear distorting lenses, and so forth. You get the idea.

The hero and heroine of the story are two ballet dancers, impossibly beautiful and graceful, who, in the middle of a televised performance, suddenly cast off their sandbags and masks and clunky hobble shoes and dance freely and beautifully. Naturally, they are hunted down as arch criminals by the government and killed.

I always think of this story anytime I read about political correctness getting taken to ridiculous extremes by EITHER liberals or conservatives(which IMHO happens constantly).

So maybe the lesson is, if you own a particularly beautiful or athletic horse, watch out!! Someday you may have to paint it green and tie its legs together so that people owning less desirable horses don’t get their feelings hurt.

You don’t always need a judge, sometimes you just need a little intestinal fortitude. (Or, in my case, you need to be in such a foul mood that the next person who crosses you is dead meat.)
I learned in 1972 that if you confront those guys, not only do they apologize, they change.

True story. Short version is that I completely lost it one morning and told off a group of construction workers, and for the rest of the time they were working on the Fine Arts Center at UMass/Amherst, these guys said hello instead of what they had been proposing I might want to do with them. And they did the same with the other women.
(What they muttered among themselves, I don’t care, but I do believe I made a definite impression.)

My view are surprisingly simplistic because I know that they work! Hey, abstinence IS always an option. Come on…show a little self control.

To throw out one of my favorite quotes from “The Princess Bride,” here’s what Westley had to say about life:

“Life is pain, Highness! Anyone who says differently is selling something.”

It’s all about ME, ME, ME!!! (The only signature worthy of a real DQ.)

Sheesh, chime in if you want, but don’t give away all the important secrets!

Hear hear. We are indeed all responsible, and both sides (and everyone else on the spectrum) have “PC” in their midst, as bgoosewood outlined above. It’s all about fitting in with your respective peer group. The term has been mis-applied in its current public context.

Also, re: only valuing those with a college education - this is truly a travesty, in my opinion. We have decided that only those with a university degree are “worthy” of a living wage, as opposed to continuing to value those who contribute, but in a different way (the trades, service sector, etc.). The result has been a push towards college education for everyone, even when those people might be better served by further education down a different path.

Anyone read much Howard Gardner? Multiple Intelligences? Different people are strong in different areas. If you’re not great at dodgeball, you can still be competitive on the debate team. And, by the way, who says we all have to be university-educated business types to be successful! Oh, wait, putting myself down again . . .

And I still think horse shows are already PC . . .

You know, dissing PC thinking is oh so PC these days.

aw crap, my text got lost. never mind.

it wasn’t cancelled after all, at least not here in poor ol’ backwoods missouri. I do get assistance, and there is a phone number I can give you if you’d like to make sure it exists and it’s not another “republican lie” And perhaps YOU want me to have a job but I assure you that you’re in the minority of group. If I made less money they would pay for all of my daycare costs. As is they pay $7 a day for it (out of $19) but if I were to work less hours or make about $5 less an hour, they would pick up the tab. They should (since the whole liberal card is “equality first”) pay the same for everyone, to give everyone a chance to get ahead.
And you’re right, maybe we should understand why the happy meal has become dinner for too many kids. Wait, who feeds the kids? Oh yeah, thier PARENTS!! And where did I ever say the teachers had to take care of the problem? Wait! I never did! And the kid doesn’t hav to “embrace his fat” just simply know that he/she is just as good of a kid even if they are a little heavy. And if they ARE heavy they need to be out playing dodgeball anyway instead of sitting on thier asses absorbing happy meals, doncha think??
And since we did get TV’s (in COLOR Ma!!) here in missouri yes I have heard of McVeigh and I cheered when he died too. So maybe they should search everyone but pay special attention to middle eastern men? I need to get Tino’s thing off my board, ya’ll will love it.
And Hobson, for God’s sake would you explain your veiws instead of coming out to throw a rock and hiding behind a Clinton intern? Pleeese? I gotta go for a bit, we have to hitch up the mule and go to town for our 6 months supplies since we don’t have supermarkets here in the ol show-me state yet

Thanks Miss Perfect but I am not worthy.
See-I was lucky enough to be part of a country where sacrifice and hard work can pay off.

Of course, it helped that my parents were middle class so my mother got enough nutrition when I was a fetus. And they were culturally inclined to emphasize the importance of an education (just weren’t going to subsidize their hippie daughter and her errant ways-which, of course was fully their prerogative.) I had no disabilities to prevent my hustling from class to job to the library and as dad kept reminding me: “Hard work never killed anyone.”

If slavery can’t exist in a democracy, I guess we weren’t a democracy for the first hundred years. Even some of our founding fathers had slaves and saw nothing wrong with slavery.

Here’s my favorite folk piece. I feel that it’s real appropriate- today of all days. Everybody all together now… Canadians-feel free to join in-it’s just one big continent after all
[God Blessed America]
This Land Was Made For You And Me
This land is your land, this land is my land
From [the] California to the [Staten] New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters,
[God blessed America for me.]
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
And saw above me that endless skyway,
And saw below me the golden valley, I said:
[God blessed America for me.]

I roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts,
And all around me , a voice was sounding:
[God blessed America for me.]

Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn’t say nothing –
[God blessed America for me.]

When the sun come shining, then I was strolling
In wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling;
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting:
[God blessed America for me.]

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people –
As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if
[God blessed America for me.]

Geeze, show a hint of empathy towards people and get labeled a PC-lover.

Do you people even know what racial profiling is? It’s sending Japanese American citizens to “camps” during WWII. I think you are fooling yourself if you think you can be safe, by searching people who “look Arab.” It seems like the people who are always barking about freedom and rights are the first in line to take them away. As hard as you may try, the world is not black and white…it is a very complicated place.

I thought this was an interesting rambling:

If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody ELSE’s dog around- A Cowboy’s Guide to Life

the idea is not that they’re not giving it to me even though I’m entitled to it. The fact is that they make the rates/tables they go by so ridiculously low that you aren’t enitiled to it. To apply (and keep) assistance you have to remain at poverty level. Say you’re using Medicaid as insurance. Obviously to get that assistance you have to make a certain amount of money. So what happens when you get a raise (even a raise of 20 cents per hour can throw you out of the loop for it). If you go even $20 over the poverty limit you don’t qualify for it. So they think that with that extra, say you work 40 hours a week, times 20 more cents per hour, that extra $16 every 2 weeks will give you enough to buy your own insurance. So what do you do? Cut down on your hours to keep your insurance (and thus keeping yourself in poverty) or do you lose the insurance and pray that nothing happens (takes a long time to pay off medical bills even with that exta $16 every pay check). And you have to ask why I think they’d rather you stay in poverty?
And as for racial profiling: there’s a reason it goes on. Jails aren’t full of white homemakers you know. I’d rather have someone’s esteem hurt than have my car jacked, that includes thugs of every color. There’s a reason no one in thier right minds goes down on Troost in KC after dark, there’s a reason that all the stores down there have bars on the windows and the restaraunts all close by 6 pm. It’s because they’re poor right? Could it be because no matter how hard they try they can’t get all the way ahead because if they do succeed they’ll be punished by taking away their insurance or their food? ooo, ouch.
