Will they breed Zenyatta again?
Maybe not entirely unknown but very uncommon. Generally that only happens if there is a physical reason for a break, a very late foal or the mare was bred and barren. Mares only have so many foals and the younger they are the better. It is rare for a serious breeder to voluntarily give up a prime foal bearing year of a valuable mare but the Mosses are so under the microscope with this horse maybe they are doing the uncommon.
Well, her foals were later and later, so at some point you need to skip a year or wind up with a baby born in a really bad month (and you might get away with hiding a December baby until January in some barns, but no way they pull that off with Zenyatta.)

I am not understanding this (my increasing senility? etc.?) article.
She was left open/left open last spring - not bred in 2014: no 2015 foal. Does this mean she’ll be open again for this year as well, or bred very late this spring for for a 2016 foal?

She has already been bred for 2016.

Thank you, LaurieB!
That is what I’d thought - that is why this thread confused the hell out of me.
But then: I could not tell what I had for breakfast yesterday. Or even if I did.

Thanks from another person wondering if she was going to be off the clock for two years rather than one.
Not that it is any of my business anyhow but she is so personable and sweet a racehorse I want to see more like her.

Must say, Zenyatta also in all just-foaled pictures I’ve seen looks totally in love with motherhood. She seems to thoroughly enjoy being a mama. I hope they get another filly. I’m really interested in seeing what Ziconic does when he gets to the track, too. He is a gorgeous fellow with a neat expression.

Yes, it is my understanding she already was sent to War Front. I am sure they will announce in due time, if and when she is confirmed in foal.

Thanks for all the info. Does anyone else remember Zenyatta’s owners saying they where not going to breed her again because she had such a difficult time delivering her filly. I believe she was hauled to Rood and Riddle after the birth?

That is not true. Maybe you are remembering her weanling filly was euthanized at R and R.

Wasn’t it Rachel Alexandra that had a difficult time foaling?

I was going to say the same thing. It was RA that has had the foaling difficulties (in both deliveries).

Apropos of nothing, I still harbor great distaste for the caretakers of Secretariat that let him get so fat and founder at the young age of 19. INEXCUSABLE.
Founder can often happen for many reasons–and with a TB it is not likely because of obesity. Much more likely he was at the start of Cushings which caused the founder (and how he digested the sugar in grass)…not obesity. And back then, they didn’t know about Cushings or have the treatments for it they do now.
Secretariat had cushings disease that led to his crestiness and laminitis. We definitely didn’t know much about cushings back then.
opps. Just saw this.

Has anyone heard if they will try breeding RA again? Or would they not risk it since she had problems after both deliveries? I think I remember hearing that RA’s mother had foaling problems too.

She’s been left I think two years now, unless they bred her back on the sly. I haven’t heard a peep. Maybe if/when Jess’s Dream actually makes it to a start it’ll come up again. I’m half-wondering if they’re babying him as much as they are because they’re going to hold the filly out to breed and as far as her racing babies he’s it.

Stonestreet has Samantha Nicole too, so that probably helps. Sure, she’s not her sister in terms of race record, but the pedigree is the same.

same pedigree doesn’t mean same exact genetics. Many full siblings (equine and otherwise) are nothing alike.

Of course the genetics aren’t the exact same but it is better than not having a full sister to breed in her absence. Small consolation I am sure.

I agree but it is surprising how many people forget there can be a significant difference. I’m truly nothing like my brother and have some full sibling horses who are very different.

I don’t think anyone was suggesting that SN and RA are just alike. Regardless of how similar or different they are, they are full siblings, they have the same sire and dam.
