I was at a horse show this past weekend, and I borrowed a horse, the horse showed up smelling very fragrant, I asked the person who I borrowed the horse from what the oder was and he mentioned he used Wind Aid and DMSO. I often use Wind Aid to give horses a bit more air, but I have never heard of mixing it with DMSO. A quick search of the internet did not yield any results. Has anyone here used the cocktail or have any thoughts on it?
no thoughts?
DMSO is a pretty powerful NSAID and can help other medications work well, so maybe it’s a (n off-label) thing.
I’ve heard of it being used orally mixed with other things, but not Wind Aid.
I’d want to discuss with my vet before glomming on willy nilly for sure. Let us know if you do and if it’s ok’d and how it works. Those of us with IAD horses are always looking for things to help our horses breathe better!
Considering that the smell comes from their breath, it would make sense for there to be some anti-inflammatory effect on the airway. But I have never seen it used for that.
When he said “Wind Aid and DMSO” are you sure he mixed them together? Maybe he administered them separately.
