Wintec Matt Ryan XC saddle (18") on eBay

ebay listing here

Posting this as it is a much sought-after model that does not turn up often in the sales listings.

For those unfamiliar, it has a very forward flap but is supposed to be a top-notch XC saddle.

I admit I’ve never tried one – my leg is not a good match for a forward flap (I ride XC and SJ in the Wintec Pro Jump, which is about as forward as I can take) – and won’t be bidding on this as I am many sizes too small for an 18" saddle

Awesome seller too

I saw that, but am also too small for an 18" :frowning:

Wasn’t Glenbaer looking?

yeahyeahyeah.

Surprisingly, my 18" didn’t feel very different from my 17.5". Or my 17". We’re talking about an inch here.

I’ve always heard that men need a larger saddle seat than women because of the way they are built.

Then how come nobody but me and the occasional child likes to ride in my 16/16.5" saddles?

There’s a point at which a saddle becomes too wide for your seat bones and forces your hip/leg/knee angles to where you’re both risking injury and not riding in proper balance. At least this is how it was explained to my by my physiotherapist when I was rehabbing a WB in his usual saddle, which was 18". I ended up needing rehabbing.

But yeah, I can ride in most 17" saddles just fine. Not the Berney Dublin Jumper, however, which fits me like a torture device. That seat is wide.

I didn’t know Glenbaer wanted the Wintec XC. She’d been using my Wintec Pro Jump, but then I showed up and hijacked it. I actually went to ebay looking for another one, even though I already have a second Pro Jump in Canada.

Guess I should have been more specific. Just meant that she was looking for a new saddle, and that was affordable. Was going to loan her my cc saddle, but pretty sure it’s too small.

I’ve never really considered buying a wintec, largely because the majority of them I have seen are deep seated, all purpose/no purpose saddles poorly suited for much other than beginner lessons and trail riding… But I like the forward flap and more open seat on this model.

Why was it discontinued? I would think it should sell well, seeing as more and more eventers seem to be using saddles with forward flaps. It would be nice to have a lightweight, low maintenance option that is properly balanced for cross country and jumping stuff bigger than crossrails.

Regardless, 18 is too big for me … I can ride in one if need be, but I definitely wouldn’t buy a saddle that was the wrong size.

I have a Pro Jump from 2002 or so. I adore it. I contacted a saddle fitter/flocker once to see how much it would cost to have it flocked with wool instead of the Cair panels and she responded:

“not worth it.”

Well then…!

I would kill for this saddle. Do you think a gofundme campaign could raise the money in three days?

The Wintec All-Purpose is my favorite saddle for young horses, fox hunting and LTD endurance rides.

So I’d disagree on the ‘poorly suited’ part.

Glenbaer was skeptical about my love of cheap synthetic saddles until I managed to convince her that a lighter weight saddle that fit well would be easier on the horse than a heavier saddle. Especially as my horses – with the exception of my fat pinto – tend to be on the smaller side and/or lightweights themselves.

But I use the Wintec Pro Jump on the fat pinto anyway. It fits his wide back quite nicely.

I don’t know how you do it, JER–I find the wintecs so wide through the twist, I just can’t.

But I do love the Ainsley I bought from Glenbaer earlier this year

And I thought that saddle was its own circle of hell.

Seriously, I cannot sit in that saddle. My hip angle is all wrong, so wrong it hunches my spine and makes me look like a turtle.

I think we have opposite anatomies. Which is why we should be happy that there’s more than one brand of saddle out there.

Too small for me. I didn’t see a huge difference between 17" and 18".

I won’t disagree. What was your injury? I did ride in a saddle for a while that likely caused a mild labral tear in my hip. It was a 17.5" CTD jumping saddle (A Stubben product/partnership in the late 90’s.)

Boy, would I like to try that saddle! I have a long thigh, and need a forward flap to accommodate it. Don’t have the scratch though. And it is literally just around the corner from me, wah!

So did anybody here get the saddle? The buyer was very determined - they placed 7 bids on it and still got it for the opening bid price. (Happy day for them!)

Hi!
I am new to the forum. I won/bought the Matt Ryan XC saddle from ebay-I have actively been looking for an 18"M for the past several years-I was extremely determined! Could not be happier that I found and purchased the rare discountinued saddle, I am ecstatic and eaglery waiting for the shipment arrival. The seller is super nice, and the saddle looks like it’s in very good condition. Can’t wait until I can take it out cross country. It was definitely a happy day!

USEA89, congratulations and welcome to COTH! Now you have to let us know how your trial ride goes!

I’m a huge fan of Wintecs and my long time search for a Matt Ryan saddle is finally over after many years. I’m about 5’10 and it’s very hard to find saddles that are forward enough, especially for jumping/xc length. I will follow up with my trial ride, thank you for the welcome! Glad I am now part of the COTH forum
