Winter Boots and Stirrup Width

Okay, I know most of us here ride English, and I do too, most of the time. I enjoy Western too, and I’m currently training my husband’s “greenie” QH gelding, so western it is. Anyhow, I am not too good at dealing with the cold weather, but I am trying to “toughen up”. ALL my boots that are insulated are really wide, and get “wedged” into the stirrups sometimes. I have very wide feet, so that… coupled with needing insulation for warmth makes for a boot so wide it’s dangerous. Any idea on how to get around this? Narrower Boots? (OUCH) Overshoe Stirrups? (I’ve ordered a pair, but have several western saddles, and it could wind up being cost prohibitive.) any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

My DH likes an english saddle, but has very wide feet. I got him a pair of these Prussian stirrups:

They come in widths up to 5 3/4. Ordering was straightforward, arrived on time, price is nice

Nice…but I don’t think they will work on a western saddle…lemme think about that…maybe they will!

I shaved off the sides of my boots with an xacto knife. It only worked because they had the spongey soles that were bigger than the actual shoe. I don’t know a darn thing about whether Western stirrups come in widths but I have a pair of Peacock stirrups that are extra wide, so they are out there.

Yep, they make extra wide western stirrups, but they are NOT cheap. I’ve found one pair that was affordable on Ebay. I have 4 western saddles though, and the costs to replace stirrups on all of them are gonna add up quick. Do they make insulated cowboy boots with a narrow toe? Maybe that will help too…

I bought some cheapie endurance stirrups ($16) off horse.com last week for just this reason. They are big enough for my size 10 Brit Colts (quite clunky), but they don’t my son’s big old size 13s.

Ooooh! Going to go see what I can find right now! Thank you for the tip, Katyb…

Would these work? They are 5" across at the base.

They have exactly the things I need! Thanks so much! I will be shopping online tonight…LOL

janiemerle: That’s a great suggestion, and they are SO pretty! Gonna go shopping online after work

If you have blevins quick releases you could swap your wide stirrups from saddle to saddle - granted it would take forever, not like buying an extra set of leathers for an English saddle for the wide stirrups (which is where my Peacocks are, on their own leathers).

I’m glad I could help. I was so happy when someone posted those on my facebook page, when I was bemoaning the expense of two more sets of endurance stirrups.

Great ideas everyone! It’s expensive having such big feet and legs. Changing stirrups from saddle to saddle is an option, at least for awhile. Thanks so much for the suggestions!

Maybe it would be more cost effective to get those electric socks, or the foot warmer packets you put into your shoes for a few hours. Any ideas about these?

I just picked up a pair of wide – 5 1/2 inch – Foot Free stirrup irons to go with my new and clunky winter riding boots.

I’m thinking I got inexpensive wide western stirrups from Weaver Leather, but maybe it was Jeffers, or one of the other cheap mail order places? If you search though, you can find inexpensive stirrups in practically any width. When we were riding outside all winter we were wearing arctic pac boots that were 3 or 4 sizes too big, so we could put enough socks in them, because it’s very hard to keep feet warn in the winter. Now that we don’t ride for as long I can use boots that are only about one size too big, and they fit in the regular endurance stirrups.
