Winter gear: coveralls and gloves?

We’re getting ready to buy coveralls for winter chores and I don’t want to make a mistake here…has anyone used these?

Are they too big/bulky? Too warm? I really dislike being cold, but don’t want to go with these if that means it’s impossible to move. I’ve looked around locally and can’t find anyone who carries these–or ANY Carhartt coveralls–so it will have to be an online purchase.

Any recommendations for gloves? Don’t need to be thin enough to ride in, but would like them nearly so. Water resistant would be nice.

Any other winter gear you can’t live without?

If you can get Work King, they make good stuff and not as stiff and bulky as Carhartt.

real pain if you have to “go #1”(unless you are a guy).
I prefer hunting pants over my long undies(Field and Stream makes good ones for women)

I got the women’s carhartts insulated overalls because I thought the coveralls may get too warm, and I can layer my top. They are a bit stiff at first but do get more pliable with use and washing. They also provide some wind protection. My biggest problem is the length. I’m not tall (~5’4"), but have relatively long legs for my height (wear a regular length pant). With the straps all the way up the body length is too long, the waist and crotch is too low and even with the shortest inseam I still have to cuff them. It gets aggregating to have to empty out all kinds of stuff (shavings, hay, dirt) that accumulates in the cuffs. Because the zippers open at the ankles, I can’t shorten the hem. I did get them several years ago and don’t know if they have been redesigned. I would guess the coveralls fit they same.

I go with ski bibs for the winter. I’m short, so usually the large in a boys size fits me. I’ve tried the Carharts, but they are too stiff and bulky for me.

Love my carhartts, they definitely lose some of the stiffness with use and washing

I’m not a fan of coveralls since you can’t change layers easily as you warm up.

LL Bean makes some nice flannel-lined jeans that are certainly not fashionable but a nice warm lower layer for winter. And then there are plenty of warm coats for a top layer - Carhartt is great for barn work.

My go to gloves of choice are the SSG Winter riding gloves. I go through about 3 pairs per winter, so not super strong, but I like how warm, flexible and tactile they are (I don’t have to take them off to fiddle with blanket straps and such). I also like that the cuff keeps hay and such out of the fingers. If it is really cold then I use Back on Track glove liners too.

They aren’t water proof, but are fairly water resistant.

I dislike coveralls as I have yet to find any that fit well, and instead go with really good Long underwear. Polar fleece is my favourite. If I need more layers, I put large sweat pants on top. Marks Work Warehouse also has fleece lined jeans, but I have yet to try them.

I wear ski pants over long underwear. When it’s really cold I’ll wear sweatpants under the ski pants, and always mittens rather than gloves. Again, the ski variety.

this is what I do

I have these on order, since they have petite sizes, and I’m very small. Www.glamouralls.com.

I really like insulated bibs and a jacket. It makes it easy to layer according to the weather and activity level. I am not a real fan of Carhatt because they are almost too heavy to trek around in. I like the ones with zippers that go all the way up the outside of my legs. Mine have a flap that cover the zipper and it makes a big difference if the wind is blowing. I’ve decided that dressing for winter is not a beauty contest. Be warm.

I love my quilted Carhartt overalls. Love them!

I to much prefer a bib style carhartt. I have some knock off brand that I got at Tractor Supply (in a pretty rose color:)) and they have served me well over the years. I find the bib style easier to add/ remove layers as the temperatures dictate. Having said that I also have an LL Bean stadium coat that I wear when just going out for a quick check, throwing hay, feeding, etc. as I find dressing in the coveralls is time consuming for a quick running out in the cold.

Hi,
I live in Iowa so need serious cold weather clothes too. I love the SSG 10Below gloves, waterproof(ish) and warm enough for all but the coldest days. Also Mountain Horse tridurance mittens with a free pinky finger are really warm without being too bulky. I wear nylon running pants over my jeans, long underwear, or whatever. They cut the wind and are not stiff or bulky. I am usually out 1-2 hours 2x per day doing my chores and I don’t like to be cold. Not a fan of carhart bibs, too stiff and take forever to dry when washed. I do wear a mid-weight carhart jacket that is supplemented with sweatshirt or more as needed.

Agree with some others on here…I prefer the bib overall style instead of the coveralls. And then I can layer on top. Of course…I don’t live in or anywhere near Minnesota

Don’t have the specific style the OP posted, but I have these Carhartt bibs for winters in MN and I would rank them as probably my best winter purchase of all time, second only to my fingerless flip-top mittens.
For wear at the barn, I always put them on over breeches & several layers of long sleeved shirts/turtlenecks/outer layer of a hoodie. So to work around the barn I was good, and all I had to do was take of the bibs to ride (and switch my boots).

I love my Walls coveralls. I agree they are much softer than Carhart. I have some insulated overalls that are cuter  but I hardly ever wear them.

Wow, I’m surprised at no love for the coveralls! Pretty standard fare in Colorado for barn work. They’ve been highly recommended here in MN, too  Already have the Carhartt coat and love it, but can certainly see why the brand might not be everyone’s preference. I will certainly look into the Walls!

Thanks for all of the advice!

STP has a great price on them if you are the right size: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/carhartt-sandstone-bib-overalls-insulated-for-women~p~57654/?filterString=s~carharrt-women%2F&colorFamily=40
