Winter season options other than Wellington

Are there other viable options for farm rental other than Wellington for the winter season? Dec-March. Open to anywhere from the carolinas down that has a good dressage scene, shows, clinics etc… Tryon area maybe? Need a private farm with housing and good facilities for between 6-10 horses. Trying to stay out of the humidity and extreme heat! Also open to renting stalls at a top facility, but only if I can do self care, not interested in boarding situation. Suggestions please!! Thank you!!

You might find a rental like that in the greater Phoenix/Scottsdale area. It probably wouldn’t be listed anywhere, however. You would instead need the help of a horse-property specializing realtor to scout properties. There are probably sale properties that have been on the market awhile, whose sellers would be happy for a lease. It’s definitely possible.

I can’t think of anywhere that you could rent stalls and do all your own chores. There are numerous facilities with onsite housing, too, and with all the amenities but to my knowledge they don’t/wouldn’t allow that. A smaller facility might, but, not sure what amenities you’d find as far as washrack, arena, etc.

That area would meet your weather criteria, and there are many clinics during those months. Shows, however, would be much fewer and farther between than in Florida.

But that would be true of anywhere that isn’t Florida, I would think.

Tryon, Southern Pines, Aiken, Ocala are all cheaper than Wellington. Ocala has a decent dressage scene, not like Wellington, though. The others are more eventing focused but I know of a few dressage riders who go to each, and there are some shows available.

Texas area maybe. Dallas/ FW does get wintery here but plenty of places always up for rent with indoors and nowhere near as bad of winters as the north. Also Houston area too its much milder there too. They have plenty of activities there since the weather is nice.

Try Southern Pines or Aiken.

Ocala is great in the winter. Pack your woolies though, we have some chilly days and temps can be freezing over night.

Southern Pines is a lovely climate in the Winter but not a good place if OP plans on having endless dressage shows week after week. There are very few rated shows and only one monthly schooling show I know of.

Thank you for the suggestions, I’ve already been looking in Ocala but can’t seem to find anything private for rent. Will look in Southern Pines. Definitely looking for dressage shows, however do not need them available every single week. Unfortunately going towards the West Coast or Arizona is not realistic for us but will continue my search on the East Coast! Has anyone stayed at Tryon International, and how is the stabling turn out situation if any?

Come to Ocala! My farm is in a beautiful community and there are two houses, a farm, and one land plot for sale. I don’t know why anyone would want to leave so, I think it is a coincidence that they are available at the same time. We have miles of hacking and my trainer, who is a Grand Prix instructor, right here. Contact Showcase Reality, they do my area.

There is a new World Equestrian Center being built here, it is going to be amazing! There have been ads in COTH.

By not many shows I actually mean almost none. One schooling show a month, maybe one rated a month, if your lucky. I believe last year there were no rated from Jan-march. There is a reason why there are no longer winter rentals advertised in the area. A friend of mine couldn’t even fill theirs, it sat empty all winter.

I would look into Aiken instead. Many, many more dressage shows there than in southern pines. Truthfully southern pines is a bit of a dead zone now for everything but eventing.

Someone else could correct me, but I don’t think Tyron International has any turnout at the show facility. You might check Carolinadressage.com and ncdcta and scdcta for show listings. There is usually a show in Camden SC or Aiken in December. I am not sure if there were any in the area in January and perhaps a one day rated show in Aiken in February. Join Charlotte area equestrians on FB and you might find something.

Ocala. Check the Facebook page Ocala Dressage for rentals. Sometimes there is something posted. Rentals do exist here. After all, lots of folks come for the winter to HITS.

TIEC (Tryon) is closed for any kind of showing Nov - March, though they do offer some schooling Saturdays with overnight stabling available for those. No turnout on the grounds.

Am I the only one who thinks Southern Pines can be cold in the winter? I would go further south, as Sportsfield Eventer mentioned the World Equestrian is going to change the area.

Definitely not the only one. The coldest weather I have ever been in was in southern pines, it was 5 degrees!!
I have been in several situations where shows were canceled in Raleigh because it was just too cold.

No turnout at TEIC. Aiken had several recognized shows over the winter. Here is a calendar:

There are TONS of schooling shows, and plenty of clinic opportunities. And plenty of farms to rent. But get on it asap.

Ocala. Check Airbnb.com. www.ocalahappyacres.com

Ocala https://m.facebook.com/topbrassfarmsporthorses/?ref=m_notif&notif_t=group_activity. Is for rent

You could also look into gulf coast of Florida near Sarasota/Bradenton - I’ve known a few trainers to winter over there. It will obviously be a lot quieter than Wellington, but I’ve heard good things about showing at Fox Lea, and it’s only a 3 hour drive from Wellington.
