Winter Tall Boots

Ariat Bromont vs. Mountain Horse Active Winter Rider?

The MH Active seems comfy but not sure about the materials. It’s not leather but probably looks fine from a distance.

Thoughts?

Looks fine and has the correct “shape” to it.

I tried on two of the Mountain Horse styles and didn’t like them, not sure which ones, sorry. But overall they are very clunky and the calf is very wide. They didn’t look all that nice either, although I know some people adore them. I do have a narrow foot and a slim calf though.

I tried on the Bromont Ariat and loved that boot. I didn’t get them but far preferred the feel of them. I couldn’t imagine having any contact with the horse in the Mountain Horse boots.

Bromonts hands down. They look and feel better than the Mountain Horse ones. I can also vouche for their warmness as my feet are usually freezing but I can only wear thin tall socks with these boots as my feet will get too hot if I wear anything thicker!

Love, love, love my Bromonts. I have the previous incarnation of them and they’ve served me well for 5 winters now.

Have you tried the Cavallo tall winter boots? Very warm, lined, and look like normal boots.

I’ve found that as long as my toes are warm I can wear any boot so I stock up on a case of those chemical toe warmers and smart wool socks.

Be careful with the non-leather winter boots if you ride a sensitive or thin-skinned TB-type horse. My friend has nylon Mountain Horse winter tall boots, and they rub the fur off the sides of her (very sensitive, very thin-skinned) TB. She does not have the same issue with suede half chaps or leather tall boots. Just something to keep in mind if your horse is a delicate flower.

To the last man and woman on our Michigan Foxhunt that goes out through the entire winter (some say more than any other hunt in the US), but all of us wear Mountain Horse. Yes, clunky, --one rider described them as “clown shoes and a cast,” but hands down warmer than anything else. Last season we had a rider come in with frostbite!!! but she was wearing leather boots at a night hunt (starts at 4PM goes until whenever) --she kept her toes but the tips turned black and fell off --ouch! Anyway, my vote is Mountain Horse --I wear Ice Riders.

Foxglove

Most people in the hunt I ride with wear Mountain Horse boots in the winter - most of us Ice Riders. I don’t think our hunts get as cold as the ones Foxglove describes, but I’m a total wimp about the cold so in order to ride when it is only 12 or 15 degrees out, I need to be dressed like I’m preparing for an Antarctic expedition and the Ice Riders do keep my feet very warm.

They are not terribly attractive and are much too wide for me, but I just wear a double layer of wool socks and that solves the problem enough to be comfortable.

Another vote for Mountain Horse! I have an older model - they used to make an all leather one, so mine are somewhat traditional looking, although I agree with the above posters that MH boots are clunky looking and bulky.

I don’t care though, because they keep my feet nice and warm

The Mountain Horse are much warmer. I have the Rim Frost. But they are very wide ok with me as I have a wide foot. I also have a pair of the Bromont field boots for cubbing days but haven’t tried them in the cold yet. They are pretty and comfortable.

Thanks all. The MH active seems to fit me well. Ive got the brossard on order to compare the two.

Well this never happens! I actually prefer the cheaper boot!

The MH active rider is bulkier than the Bromont, but much taller and more comfy
The regular calf Bromont seems tight. Id never get thicker breeches zipped in there.

MH Active Rider wins

I didn’t care for the Brossards, they were slippery against the saddle and just didn’t feel right.

I have been looking at the Active Riders because my pair of old Rimfrosts are falling to shreds. Would you say they run tall, short, normal?

I normally wear a tall and these are a decent height on me. Id say they run tall.
